Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Bukhārī also relates—through al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿĀʾishah and Ibn ʿAbbās—that they said:

“When death approached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ he kept casting a striped cloak over his face; whenever the heat weighed upon him he would uncover his face and say while he was in that state:

‘May Allah’s curse be upon the Jews and the Christians; they turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.’

He was warning against what they had done.”

I say: As for these three garments, nothing is known of their fate after that. We have already mentioned that a red blanket on which he used to pray was spread beneath him in his noble grave. Were we to pursue everything he wore during his lifetime, the discussion would become protracted; its proper place is the “Book of Clothing” in my larger work, al-Aḥkām al-Kabīr, God willing. In Him we place our trust and upon Him we rely.

Mention of his horses and mounts ﷺ

Ibn Isḥāq said—on the authority of Yazīd ibn Ḥabīb, from Marthad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yazanī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zurayr, from ʿAlī—that he said:

“The Prophet ﷺ had a horse called al-Murtajiz, a donkey called ʿUfayr, a mule named Duldul; his sword was Dhū-l-Fiqār and his coat of mail Dhū-l-Fuḍūl.”

Al-Bayhaqī transmitted a similar report through al-Ḥakam, from Yaḥyā ibn al-Jazzār, from ʿAlī, and commented:

“In the Sunan we have also narrated the names of the horses that were in the care of the two Saʿdīs: Lazāz, al-Luḥayf—some say al-Lukhayf—al-Ẓarib, and the one he rode that belonged to Abū Ṭalḥah, which was called al-Mandūb. His she-camel was al-Qaṣwāʾ—and also al-ʿAḍbāʾ and al-Jadʿāʾ—and his mules were the dapple-grey and the white.”

Al-Bayhaqī further said: “None of the reports indicate that he died leaving them behind, except what we have transmitted concerning the white mule, his weapons, a piece of land he made a charitable endowment, some of his garments, his sandals, his ring, and what else we have cited in this chapter.”

Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī said: Zamʿah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away while a woollen cloak of his was still on the loom.”

This chain of transmission is sound.
