He asked, “From what should I fashion it?”
He replied, “Make it of silver, but do not let it reach the full weight of a mithqāl.” The Prophet ﷺ used to wear it on his right hand.
Abu Dāwūd (1), al-Tirmidhī in al-Shamāʾil (2), and al-Nasāʾī (3) all relate this through Shurayk the judge (4), from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥunayn (5), from his father, from ʿAlī رضي الله عنه, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Shurayk added, “Abū Salamah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān also told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wear his ring on his right hand.”
Another narration places it on the left hand: Abu Dāwūd (6) reports through ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Abī Rawwād, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore his ring on his left hand, with the bezel turned toward the inside of his palm.
Abu Dāwūd commented: it was likewise transmitted by Abū Isḥāq and Usāmah ibn Zayd, from Nāfiʿ, as “on his right hand.”
Hannād (7) narrated to us, from ʿAbdah, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Nāfiʿ, that Ibn ʿUmar used to wear his ring on his left hand.
Abu Dāwūd (8) further said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿīd narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Bukayr transmitted to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: “I saw al-Ṣalt ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Nawfal ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib wearing a ring on the little finger of his right hand, so I asked, ‘What is this?’ He replied, ‘I saw Ibn ʿAbbās wearing his ring like this, with its stone on the back of the finger. I am certain that Ibn ʿAbbās used to mention that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore his ring in the same manner.’”
Al-Tirmidhī (9) relates this through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq as well, and then adds: Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl—meaning al-Bukhārī—said, “The report of Ibn Isḥāq from al-Ṣalt is sound (ḥasan).”
Al-Tirmidhī also records in al-Shamāʾil (10), from Anas, Jābir, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore his ring on the right hand.
And al-Bukhārī (11) said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī narrated to us; my father narrated to me; from Thumāmah; from Anas ibn Mālik—
