Then Abū Dāwūd said (1): Wahb ibn Baqiyyah narrated to us; from Khālid; from Saʿīd; from Qatādah; from Anas—conveying the same meaning as the report of ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus—with the addition: “It remained on his hand until he passed away, then on Abū Bakr’s hand until he passed away, then on ʿUmar’s hand until he passed away, and then on ʿUthmān’s. While he was beside a well, the ring slipped and fell into it. The well was emptied, but it could not be retrieved.” Abū Dāwūd alone transmits this version through this chain.
Then Abū Dāwūd said (2): Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd and Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; they said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, informing us that Yūnus related from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Anas told me: “The Prophet’s ﷺ ring was of silver, and its bezel stone was Abyssinian.”
This ḥadith was also recorded by al-Bukhārī (3) through the narration of al-Layth, and by Muslim (4) through the narration of Ibn Wahb, Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā al-Anṣārī, and Sulaymān ibn Bilāl. Al-Nasāʾī (5) and Ibn Mājah (6) add the wording: “and ʿUthmān after ʿUmar.” All five transmit it from Yūnus ibn Yazīd al-Aylī. Al-Tirmidhī (7) said: “Sound, authentic, and rare through this chain.”
Then Abū Dāwūd said (8): Aḥmad ibn Yūnus narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us; Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “The Prophet’s ﷺ ring was entirely of silver, its bezel being part of it.” Al-Tirmidhī (9) and al-Nasāʾī (10) likewise recorded it through Zuhayr ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Juʿfī Abū Khaythamah al-Kūfī, and al-Tirmidhī said: “Sound, authentic, and rare through this chain.”
Al-Bukhārī (11) said: Abū Maʿmar narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Ṣuhayb narrated to us, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a ring made and said, ‘We have adopted a ring and engraved upon it an inscription; therefore no one is to engrave the same inscription.’” Anas added: “I can still see its sparkle on his little finger.”
Then Abū Dāwūd said (12): Nuṣayr ibn al-Faraj narrated to us; Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allāh; from Nāfiʿ; from Ibn ʿUmar: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fashioned a ring of gold, placed its bezel against the inside of his palm, and engraved upon it: ‘Muḥammad…’”
