and their prescribed times, and is convinced that they are a truth from Allah, he will enter Paradise—or, as he also said, “Paradise is assured for him.”
(1) This wording is reported exclusively by Aḥmad, but there is a break in the chain between Qatādah and Ḥanẓalah; Allah knows best.
The second ḥadīth was transmitted by Aḥmad, Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah through Saʿīd al-Jurayrī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Ḥanẓalah:
“If you were to remain in the state you are in when you are with me, the angels would shake hands with you in your gatherings, in your streets, and on your beds. But the heart is one way for a time and another way for a time.”
Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhī also narrated it through ʿImrān ibn Dāwir al-Qaṭṭān, from Qatādah, from Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Shikhkhīr, from Ḥanẓalah.
The third ḥadīth was related by Aḥmad, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah through Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Muraqqaʿ ibn Ṣayfī ibn Ḥanẓalah, from his grandfather, concerning the prohibition of killing women in war.
Imam Aḥmad, however, also reported it through ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said:
“I was informed by Abū al-Zinād, from al-Muraqqaʿ ibn Ṣayfī ibn Rabāḥ ibn Rabīʿ—from his grandfather Rabāḥ ibn Rabīʿ, the brother of Ḥanẓalah the scribe,” and he mentioned the same ḥadīth.
Aḥmad likewise narrated it from Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad and Ibrāhīm ibn Abī al-ʿAbbās, both of them from Ibn Abī al-Zinād, from his father.
Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr and Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī both reported it from al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Muraqqaʿ, from his grandfather Rabāḥ; this is also the route followed by al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Mājah.
Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī further transmitted it through ʿUmar ibn Muraqqaʿ, from his father, from his grandfather Rabāḥ.
Accordingly, the ḥadīth is actually from Rabāḥ, not from Ḥanẓalah. For this reason Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah remarked: “Sufyān al-Thawrī made a mistake in this ḥadīth.”
