ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak also transmits the report from Ibn Jābir, and both Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī record it as well, through Ibn Wahb, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥārith, from al-Qāsim Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUqbah.
Among those who served the Prophet ﷺ was Qays ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah al-Anṣārī al-Khazrajī (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Bukhārī relates on the authority of Anas that “Qays ibn Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah held with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the same standing as the chief of security with a ruler.” Qays—may Allah be pleased with him—was one of the tallest men and was virtually beardless.
It is said that if one of the tallest people pulled on his trousers and drew them up to his nose, his feet would still reach the ground. Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān (may Allah be pleased with him) once sent those very trousers to the Byzantine emperor, asking, “Do you have a man whose height would suit these?” The emperor was amazed.
They further describe Qays as generous, widely praised, insightful, and shrewd. He fought on ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib’s side at Ṣiffīn.
Misʿar reports from Maʿbad ibn Khālid that Qays ibn Saʿd would continually raise his index finger in supplication—may Allah be pleased with him and be well pleased with him.
According to al-Wāqidī, Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ, and others, he died in Madinah toward the end of Muʿāwiyah’s reign.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār relates—through ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb al-Sijistānī, ʿAlī ibn Yazīd al-Ḥanafī, Saʿd ibn al-Ṣalt, al-Aʿmash, Abū Sufyān, and Anas—that twenty young men from the Anṣār used to stay close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to attend to his needs; whenever he wished to undertake something, he would dispatch them to see to it.
