Ibn Mājah likewise records the report, through Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqqī, from ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus, from Thawr, from Ziyād, from his brother ʿUthmān ibn Abī Sawdah, from Maymūnah the Prophet’s freedwoman ﷺ.
Abū Dāwūd also transmits it—by way of al-Nufaylī from Miskīn ibn Bukayr, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—on the authority of Ziyād from Maymūnah, without mentioning the brother; Allah knows best.
Aḥmad said: Ḥusayn and Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; both said, “Isrāʾīl related to us, from Zayd ibn Jubayr, from Abū Yazīd al-Ḍabbī, from Maymūnah bint Saʿd, the Prophet’s freedwoman ﷺ, who said: The Prophet ﷺ was asked about a child born of fornication. He replied, ‘There is no good in him. A pair of sandals with which I fight in the way of Allah is dearer to me than emancipating a child of fornication.’ ”
Al-Nasāʾī reports the ḥadīth as well, through ʿAbbās al-Dūrī, and Ibn Mājah through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah—both routes stemming from Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn—with the same wording. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī relates: “Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; al-Muḥāribī narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah narrated to us, from Ayyūb ibn Khālid, from Maymūnah—she used to serve the Prophet ﷺ—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘A woman who parades her adornment before those who are not her people will be like a patch of darkness on the Day of Resurrection, devoid of light.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī also transmits it through Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah and remarks, “We know it only through his narration, and he is considered weak in ḥadīth.” Some transmitters have reported it from him as a statement not traced back to the Prophet.
Among the women concerned is Maymūnah bint Abī ʿAnbasah—or ʿUnbasah, as stated by Abū ʿUmar and Ibn Mandah. Abū Nuʿaym, however, calls this a scribal mistake and says the correct name is Maymūnah bint Abī ʿAsīb. Al-Mushajjaʿ ibn Muṣʿab also transmitted her narration.
