Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

al-Ḥarāzī relates: I heard Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī say, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with his Companions. He stepped inside for a moment, then returned after having bathed. We asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, has something happened?’ He replied:

“Yes. So-and-so passed by me and a desire for women arose in my heart, so I went to one of my wives and satisfied myself with her. Do likewise, for seeking the lawful in this way is among the finest of your deeds.”

Aḥmad (1) said: Wakiʿ narrated to us, al-Aʿmash from Sālim ibn Abī l-Jaʿd, from Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The likeness of this ummah is that of four men.

  1. A man to whom Allah has granted wealth and knowledge; he acts upon his knowledge regarding his wealth and spends it in its proper place.
  2. A man to whom Allah has given knowledge but no wealth; he says, ‘If I possessed the wealth of that man I would do with it as he does.’”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “These two are equal in reward.
  3. A man to whom Allah has given wealth but no knowledge; he flounders with it, spending it in ways not sanctioned.
  4. And a man to whom Allah has given neither wealth nor knowledge; he says, ‘If I had wealth like that man I would do what he does.’”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “These two are equal in sin.”

Ibn Mājah (2) transmitted it likewise from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, both from Wakiʿ. He also reported it through another route—from Manṣūr, from Sālim ibn Abī l-Jaʿd, from the son of Abū Kabshah, from his father—some naming him ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Kabshah.

Aḥmad (3) further said: Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Rabbih related to us, Muḥammad ibn Ḥarb, al-Zubaydī, Rāshid ibn Saʿd, Abū ʿĀmir al-Hawzanī (4), from Abū Kabshah al-Anmārī, who came to him and said, “Loan me a mount from your horse, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Whoever lends a horse to a Muslim and it is later returned to him shall have a reward equal to that of seventy [horses] made ready and mounted in the cause of Allah.’” (6)

Al-Tirmidhī (7) also narrated—from Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl, Abū Nuʿaym, ʿUbādah ibn Muslim, Yūnus ibn Khabbāb, Saʿīd Abū l-Bukhturī al-Ṭāʾī—that Abū Kabshah said:

“Three matters I swear by, and I will relate to you something—so commit it to memory: A servant’s wealth is never diminished by charity; whenever a servant is wronged and bears it patiently, Allah increases him in honor; and whenever a servant opens the door of begging, Allah opens for him a door of poverty …” —and he continued the ḥadīth. Al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ. Aḥmad (8) likewise transmitted it through Ghundar, from Shuʿbah, from al-Aʿmash, from Sālim ibn Abī l-Jaʿd, from him.

(7) Jāmi‘ at-Tirmidhi, no. 2325; this is an authentic hadith. (8) I note that Imam Ahmad records it in his Musnad (vol. 4, p. 231) on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh Numayr from ʿUbāda ibn Muslim. The chain cited by the compiler corresponds to Ahmad’s version (vol. 4, p. 230) of the hadith “The example of this ummah …,” which precedes this narration.
