Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Duḥaym said: “Aḥmad ibn Ḥāzim narrated to us; ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā and al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, from Abū Dāwūd the story-teller, from Abū al-Ḥamrāʾ, who said:
‘I kept watch in Madinah for seven full months, as if it were one single day. During that time the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—would come every morning to the door of ʿAlī and Fāṭimah and say, “Prayer, prayer!
“Indeed, Allah only desires to remove impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you completely.” (Q 33:33)’
Aḥmad ibn Ḥāzim added: “ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā and al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn—this is al-Faḍl’s wording—narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Abī Isḥāq, from Abū Dāwūd, from Abū al-Ḥamrāʾ, who said:
‘The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—passed by a man who had food in a container. He put his hand into it and said, “You have been deceitful! Whoever cheats us is not one of us.”’
Ibn Mājah also recorded it from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah, from Abū Nuʿaym, with this single chain. Abū Dāwūd here is Nufayʿ ibn al-Ḥārith al-Aʿmā, one of the rejected weak narrators.
ʿAbbās al-Dūrī related from Ibn Maʿīn: “Abū al-Ḥamrāʾ, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah, is named Hilāl ibn al-Ḥārith. He used to reside in Ḥimṣ, and I saw there a boy from his descendants.” Another said, “His home was outside the gate of Ḥimṣ.” Abū al-Wāziʿ, on the authority of Samurah, said: “Abū al-Ḥamrāʾ was one of the freedmen (mawālī).”
Among them is Abū Salmā, the shepherd of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. He is also called Abū Salām, and his personal name is Ḥurayth.
Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī said: “Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥah narrated to us; ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Abū Salmā, the Prophet’s shepherd, told me:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—say, “Whoever meets Allah bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and believes in the Resurrection and the Reckoning, will enter Paradise.”’
We asked, ‘Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?’ He placed his two fingers in his ears and said, ‘I heard it from him not once, nor twice, nor three times, nor even four.’
Ibn ʿAsākir recorded nothing from him except this ḥadīth, while al-Nasāʾī included another in “ʿAmal al-Yawm wa’l-Laylah,” and Ibn Mājah cited a third.”}
