Ibn ʿAsākir(1) also transmits—through the isnād of Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Saʿīd al-Ḥāfiẓ; ʿUbayd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Juʿfī; al-Ḥasan ibn Abī ʿAbd Allāh al-Farrāʾ; Muṣʿab ibn Sallām; Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī; Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—declared, “Had Ibrāhīm lived, he would have been a prophet.”
Ibn ʿAsākir(2) likewise relates—by way of Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Samurah; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Asadī; Abū Shaybah—from Anas, who said: When Ibrāhīm died, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “Do not wrap him in his shroud until I have looked at him.” He came, bent over the child, and wept until his cheeks and sides quivered, peace and blessings be upon him.
I say: This Abū Shaybah is not relied upon for transmission.
He (Ibn ʿAsākir)(3) also reports—through Muslim ibn Khālid al-Zanjī; Ibn Khuthaym; Shahr ibn Ḥawshab—from Asmāʾ bint Yazīd ibn al-Sakan, who said: When Ibrāhīm passed away, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—wept. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said, “You are the one who best knows Allah’s right.” He replied, “The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, yet we utter nothing that would anger the Lord. Were it not for a true promise, a meeting that will surely take place, and the certainty that the later among us will follow the earlier, we would have felt for you, O Ibrāhīm, a sorrow even greater than what we now feel. Indeed, O Ibrāhīm, we are truly saddened by your loss.”
Imām Aḥmad(6) said: Aswad ibn ʿĀmir related to us; Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Jābir, from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Barāʾ, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—performed the funeral prayer over his son Ibrāhīm, who died at sixteen months of age, and said, “He has in Paradise someone who will complete his nursing, and he is a siddīq.” This has also been transmitted through al-Ḥakam ibn ʿUtaybah(7), from al-Shaʿbī, from al-Barāʾ.
Abū Yaʿlā(8) said: al-Qawārīrī(9) related to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Awfā, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—prayed over his son, and I prayed behind him; he pronounced four takbīrs over him.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr also reported—on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq(10)—who said: Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah ibn Yazīd ibn Rukkānah told me that Ibrāhīm, the Messenger of Allah’s son, died when he was eighteen months old, and that no funeral prayer was performed for him.
