then their brother ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar married her, and she died while in his household. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar had earlier married her sister Zaynab, daughter of ʿAlī and Fāṭimah, and she too died while married to him.

Fāṭimah herself passed away six months after the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—according to the view most widely held(1). This is the report established from ʿĀʾishah in the Ṣaḥīḥ(2)(3), and it is likewise the position of al-Zuhrī and Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir. A different narration from al-Zuhrī states that the interval was three months, while Abū al-Zubayr says two months. Ibn Buraydah(4)(5) held that she lived on for seventy full days, whereas ʿAmr ibn Dīnār maintained that she survived eight months, a view also related from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith; in another chain from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār the period is given as four months.

As for Ibrāhīm, he was the son of Māriyah the Copt, as mentioned earlier; he was born in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the eighth year AH. Ibn Luhayʿah(6) and others transmit from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād that when Māriyah conceived Ibrāhīm, Gabriel came and said, “Peace be upon you, O father of Ibrāhīm. Allah has granted you a son through your bond-woman Māriyah and commands you to name him Ibrāhīm. May Allah bless him for you and make him the delight of your eyes in this world and the Hereafter.”

The ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār(7) relates—from Muḥammad ibn Miskīn, from ʿUthmān ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn Luhayʿah, from ʿUqayl and Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas—that when the Prophet’s son Ibrāhīm was born, something weighed on his heart, so Gabriel came and said, “Peace be upon you, O father of Ibrāhīm.”

Asbāṭ(8) reports from al-Suddī—Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—that he asked Anas ibn Mālik, “How old did the Prophet’s son Ibrāhīm live to be?” He answered, “He had already filled his cradle, and had he lived he would have been a prophet; but he could not remain, for your Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—is the last of all prophets.”

Imām Aḥmad(9) recorded—from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī, from Sufyān, from al-Suddī, from Anas ibn Mālik—that he said, “Had the Prophet’s son Ibrāhīm lived, he would have been a truthful Prophet (ṣiddīq nabiyy).”
