—Rayḥānah the Qurayẓīyah. The Prophet also owned another beautiful bond-woman; his wives schemed against her, fearing she might win his affection. He possessed yet another prized bond-woman whom Zaynab bint Jahsh had given him as a gift (1). Over the matter of Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy he had stayed away from Zaynab during Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Muḥarram, and Ṣafar (2). When the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal—the very month in which he, peace and blessings be upon him, would later pass away—arrived, he was reconciled with Zaynab and visited her. She said, “I do not know how I can ever repay you,” and she presented the bond-woman to him, peace and blessings be upon him.
Saʿīf ibn ʿUmar narrated, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to allot Māriyah and Rayḥānah a turn on one occasion and leave them without a turn on another.
Abū Nuʿaym reported: Abū Muḥammad Ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqidī stated that Rayḥānah died in the year 16 AH (3); ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb led her funeral prayer and buried her in al-Baqīʿ.
Section: A mention of his children—upon him and upon them be prayers and peace (4)
There is unanimous agreement that all of his children were by Khadījah bint Khuwaylid—may Allah be pleased with her—except Ibrāhīm, who was born to Māriyah bint Shamʿūn the Copt. Muḥammad ibn Saʿd (5) said: Hishām ibn al-Kalbī told us, narrating from his father, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:
“The eldest of the Messenger of Allah’s children was al-Qāsim, followed by Zaynab, then ʿAbd Allāh, then Umm Kulthūm, then Fāṭimah, and finally Ruqayyah. Al-Qāsim died—the first of his children to die, in Mecca—then ʿAbd Allāh passed away.
Al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil al-Sahmī remarked, ‘His line has been cut off; he is abtar.’
Thereupon Allah, exalted is He, revealed:
“Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar (1);
so pray to your Lord and sacrifice (2);
indeed, the one who hates you—he is the one cut off.” [al-Kawthar: 3]
He continued: Māriyah later bore him Ibrāhīm in Madinah, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the eighth year after the Hijrah, and the boy died at the age of eighteen months.”
Abū al-Faraj al-Muʿāfā ibn Zakariyyā al-Jarīrī (6) said: ʿAbd al-Bāqī ibn Qāniʿ (7) narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn Bakkār narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ziyād and al-Furāt ibn al-Sāʾib told me, from Maymūn ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“Khadījah bore the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad. After that, no child was born to him for some time, and while the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was …”
