Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

her breasts, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped back and said, “Put your garment on.” When morning came he told her, “Return to your family,” and he paid her full dowry.

Abū Nuʿaym likewise transmitted this report—from Jamīl (2) ibn Zayd, from Sahl ibn Zayd al-Anṣārī, who had seen the Prophet—stating: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married a woman from Banū Ghifār …,” and he recounted the same incident.

I say: Among the women he, peace be upon him, married but with whom he did not consummate the union was Umm Sharik al-Azdiyyah. (Al-Wāqidī (3) said: the sound view is that she was from the tribe of Daws; it is also said she was Anṣāriyyah (4) or ʿĀmiriyyah, and that she was Khawlah bint Ḥakīm al-Sulamiyyah. Al-Wāqidī (5) also stated that her name was Ghaziyyah bint Jābir ibn Ḥakīm.)

Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq related—from Ḥakīm ibn Ḥakīm, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from his father—that the total number of women the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, married was fifteen; among them was Umm Sharik al-Anṣāriyyah, who had offered herself to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah reported from Qatādah that he married Umm Sharik al-Anṣāriyyah (4) of Banū al-Najjār, and that he said, “I like to marry from the Anṣār, but I dislike their jealousy,” yet he never consummated the marriage with her.

Ibn Isḥāq also narrated, through the same chain, that he, peace be upon him, married Laylā bint al-Khaṭīm al-Anṣāriyyah. She was strongly jealous, feared she might wrong herself concerning him, and therefore asked to be released; he released her.

Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid (6) narrated from al-Shaʿbī, from Umm Hāniʾ Fākhtah bint Abī Ṭālib, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, asked for her hand. She explained that she had small children, so he left her, saying: “The finest women ever to ride camels are the righteous women of Quraysh: the most compassionate toward a child in his infancy and the most protective of a husband’s wealth.”
