ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Jaḥsh al-Asadī of the Banū Khuzaīmah. After that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umm Salamah, daughter of Abī Umayyah—her given name was Hind—who had previously been the wife of Abū Salamah ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Asad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā.
He then married Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilāliyyah, followed by al-ʿĀliyah bint Ẓabyān of Banū Bakr ibn ʿAmr ibn Kilāb, and later a woman from Banū al-Jawn of the Kindah tribe.
He captured Juwayriyyah—during the expedition in which he demolished the idol Manāt, namely the campaign of al-Muraysīʿ—the daughter of al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Ḍirār of Banū al-Muṣṭaliq, a branch of Khuzaʿah. He likewise captured Ṣafiyyah, daughter of Ḥuyayy ibn Akhtab of Banū al-Naḍīr. Both women were part of the booty that Allah bestowed upon him, and he allocated them (1) to himself.
He took his Coptic bond-woman (2) as a concubine, and she bore him Ibrāhīm. He also took Rayḥānah of Banū Qurayẓah as a concubine, then set her free; she returned to her people and observed seclusion while among them.
The Messenger of Allah—peace be upon him—divorced al-ʿĀliyah bint Ẓabyān, separated from the woman of Banū ʿAmr ibn Kilāb, and parted from the woman of Banū al-Jawn of Kindah because of a white skin blemish. Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilāliyyah died while the Messenger of Allah was still alive.
We have learned that al-ʿĀliyah bint Ẓabyān, whom he divorced, remarried before Allah forbade the Prophet’s wives to remarry; she wed a paternal cousin from her clan and bore children among them. We have cited the chain of transmission because of its unusual mention that Sawdah’s marriage took place in Madinah, whereas the correct view is that it occurred in Mecca before the Hijrah, as stated earlier. Allah knows best.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr (3) relates from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq: Khadījah bint Khuwaylid died three years before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, emigrated. During her lifetime he took no other wife, and she and Abū Ṭālib died in the same year. After Khadījah’s death the Messenger of Allah married Sawdah bint Zamʿah; after Sawdah he married ʿĀʾishah bint Abī Bakr—he married no other virgin besides her, and he had no children from her until he died.
After ʿĀʾishah he married Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar; then Zaynab bint Khuzaymah al-Hilāliyyah, the Mother of the Poor; next Umm Ḥabībah, daughter of Abū Sufyān; then Umm Salamah, Hind bint Abī Umayyah; after her Zaynab bint Jaḥsh; then Juwayriyyah, daughter of al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Ḍirār; afterwards Ṣafiyyah, daughter of Ḥuyayy ibn Akhtab; and finally Maymūnah, daughter of al-Ḥārith (4) al-Hilāliyyah. This sequence (5) is better and closer to the truth than the order given by al-Zuhrī. Allah knows best.
Yūnus ibn Bukayr also reported—from Abū Yaḥyā, from Jamīl (6) ibn Zayd al-Ṭāʾī, from Sahl ibn Zayd al-Anṣārī—who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married a woman from Banū Ghifār. When he entered upon her, he instructed her to remove her garment; she did so, and he saw a white patch of vitiligo on
