Ibn ʿAsākir relates that she was also said to be Sanāʾ, daughter of al-Ṣalt ibn Ḥabīb ibn Ḥārithah ibn Hilāl ibn Ḥarām ibn Simāk ibn ʿAwf al-Sulamī.
Ibn Saʿd reports—on the authority of Hishām ibn Muḥammad al-Kalbī, who heard from al-ʿArzamī, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—that among the wives of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was Sanāʾ bint Sufyān ibn ʿAwf ibn Kaʿb ibn Abī Bakr ibn Kilāb.
Ibn ʿUmar further states that the Prophet, peace be upon him, sent Abū Usayd to propose on his behalf to a woman of Banū ʿĀmir named ʿAmrah bint Yazīd ibn ʿUbayd ibn Kilāb. He married her, but when he learned she had a white blemish, he divorced her.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd, citing al-Wāqidī, who heard from Abū Maʿshar, narrates: The Messenger of Allah married Mulaykah bint Kaʿb, a woman renowned for extraordinary beauty. ʿĀʾishah visited her and remarked, “Are you not ashamed to marry the slayer of your father?” Mulaykah thereupon sought refuge in Allah from him, so the Prophet divorced her. Her family came and pleaded, “Messenger of Allah, she is young and lacks discernment; she was deceived. Take her back.” He refused, and at their request he allowed them to marry her to a kinsman of hers from Banū ʿUdhrah.
Al-Wāqidī adds that her father had been killed by Khālid ibn al-Walīd on the day of the Conquest.
He further reports—through ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Jundaʿī, from his father, from ʿAtāʾ ibn Yazīd—that the Messenger of Allah consummated the marriage with her in Ramadan of the eighth year after the Hijrah, and that she died while still his wife. Al-Wāqidī remarks, however, that “our colleagues reject this report.”
The ḥadith scholar Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir records the following chain: Abū al-Fatḥ Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Māhānī; Shujāʿ ibn ʿAlī ibn Shujāʿ; Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Mandah; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥalīm al-Marwazī; Abū al-Muwajjih Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr al-Fazārī; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak; Yūnus ibn Yazīd; from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married Khadījah bint Khuwaylid ibn Asad in Mecca; she had previously been the wife of ʿAtīq ibn ʿĀʾidh al-Makhzūmī. He later married ʿĀʾishah bint Abī Bakr in Mecca, and in Madinah he married Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar—who had been married to Khunays ibn Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī—then Sawdah bint Zamʿah, who had been the wife of al-Sakrān ibn ʿAmr of Banū ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy, and thereafter Umm Ḥabībah bint Abī Sufyān, who had previously been married to …” (the narration continues).
