Saʿd, quoting his father and Abū Usayd, said:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umaymah bint Sharāḥīl. When she was ushered in to him, he reached out his hand toward her, but she appeared to dislike that. He therefore ordered Abū Usayd to prepare her for departure and to clothe her in two striped garments.
Al-Bukhārī further states: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Abī al-Wazīr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated from Ḥamzah, from his father, and from ʿAbbās ibn Sahl ibn Saʿd, from his father, this same report. Al-Bukhārī alone, among the authors of the canonical collections, relates these versions.
Al-Bukhārī also said: al-Humaydī narrated to us; al-Walīd narrated to us; al-Awzāʿī narrated: I asked al-Zuhrī, “Which of the Prophet’s wives sought refuge from him?” He replied: ʿUrwah informed me, from ʿĀʾishah, that when the daughter of al-Jawn was brought in to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, she said, “I seek refuge in Allah from you.” He answered, “You have sought refuge with the Most Great; return to your family.” Al-Bukhārī added that Ḥajjāj ibn Abī Manīʿ transmitted it from his grandfather, from al-Zuhrī, that ʿUrwah informed him ʿĀʾishah said … This narration is reported solely by Bukhārī and not by Muslim.
Al-Bayhaqī says: I saw in the book Maʿrifah by Ibn Mandah that the woman who sought refuge was Umaymah bint al-Nuʿmān ibn Sharāḥīl. Others say she was Fāṭimah bint al-Dahhāk, but the sound view is that she was Umaymah, and Allah knows best. They also claim that the Kilābiyyah’s name was ʿAmrah; she is the one whose father boasted that she had never been ill, whereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, declined to consummate the marriage.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd relates—from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from al-Zuhrī—that she was Fāṭimah bint al-Dahhāk ibn Sufyān. She sought refuge from him, so he divorced her; afterward she would gather camel droppings and say, “I am the wretched one.” He adds that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married her in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of the eighth year AH, and she died in the year sixty AH.
Yūnus reports—on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq—that among those he married but with whom he did not consummate the marriage were Asmāʾ bint Kaʿb al-Jawniyyah and ʿAmrah bint Yazīd al-Kilābiyyah. Ibn ʿAbbās and Qatādah say she was Asmāʾ bint al-Nuʿmān ibn Abī al-Jawn; Allah knows best.
Ibn ʿAbbās also said: When she sought refuge from him, he departed angry. Al-Ashʿath said, “Let this not distress you, O Messenger of Allah; I have someone more beautiful than she,” and he married him to his sister Qutaylah. Others maintain that this occurred in Rabīʿ of the ninth year AH.
Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah reports, on the authority of Qatādah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married fifteen women, and he mentioned among them
