He deferred the rest of them; he never approached them before he passed away, and after him they never married. Among these women was Umm Sharik.
That is what the Exalted One refers to in His words:
“You may defer any of them you wish and draw near to any of them you wish, and if you desire any of those whom you had set aside, there is no blame on you.” (Al-Aḥzāb 33:51)
Al-Bayhaqī says: We have likewise transmitted—from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—that Khawlah, meaning the daughter of Ḥakīm, was among the women who offered themselves to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
He further states: In the narration of Abū Usayd al-Sāʿidī concerning the woman of al-Jawn who sought refuge, and whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent back to her people, her name is given as Umaymah bint al-Nuʿmān ibn Sharāḥīl—that is how the report reads.
Imām Aḥmad related: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd-Allāh al-Zubayrī told us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ghasīl told us, from Ḥamzah ibn Abī Usayd, from his father, and ʿAbbās ibn Sahl, from his father; both said:
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by us with some of his Companions. We went out with him until we reached an orchard called al-Shawṭ. When we came to two adjoining orchards we sat between them, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Sit down here.” He then went inside, for the woman of al-Jawn had been brought and placed in a room belonging to Umaymah bint al-Nuʿmān ibn Sharāḥīl; a nurse was attending her.
When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon her he said, “Give yourself to me.” She replied, “Does a queen give herself to a commoner? I seek refuge in Allah from you.” He said, “You have sought refuge with One who grants refuge.” He then came out to us and said, “O Abū Usayd, clothe her in two striped garments and return her to her family.”
Someone other than Abū Aḥmad said: She was a woman from Banū al-Jawn named Umaynah.
Al-Bukhārī reports: Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ghasīl narrated to us, from Ḥamzah ibn Abī Usayd, from his father, who said:
We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, until we reached an orchard called al-Shawṭ. When we arrived at two orchards we sat between them, and he, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Sit here.” He entered, and the woman of al-Jawn had been lodged in a house among the palm-trees that belonged to Umaymah bint al-Nuʿmān ibn Sharāḥīl, with her nurse beside her. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon her he said, “Offer yourself to me.” She replied, “Does a queen offer herself to a commoner?” He reached out his hand to calm her, whereupon she said, “I seek refuge in Allah from you.” He said, “You have sought refuge with One who grants refuge.” He then came out to us and said, “O Abū Usayd, clothe her in two striped garments and send her back to her people.”
Al-Bukhārī also said: al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Walīd narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ghasīl, from ʿAbbās ibn Sahl ibn—
