of Khuzaʿah; he embraced Islam, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then married her. Before that she had been the wife of her cousin Safwān ibn Abī al-Shafr, according to Qatādah, reporting from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, al-Shaʿbī, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, and others. They add that this branch of Khuzaʿah were allies of Abū Sufyān against the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; hence Ḥassān composed:
“The pact of al-Ḥārith son of Abī Ḍirār,
and the pact of Qurayẓah are alike in your eyes.”
Sīf ibn ʿUmar, narrating from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, said: “Juwayriyah had been married to her cousin Mālik ibn Safwān ibn Tawlab Dhī al-Shafr ibn Abī al-Sarḥ ibn Mālik ibn al-Muṣṭaliq.”
He also records that Ṣafiyyah bint Ḥuyayy ibn Akhṭab of Banū al-Naḍīr was taken captive on the day of Khaybar while she was a bride of Kinānah ibn Abī al-Ḥuqayq. Sīf ibn ʿUmar further claims that before marrying Kinānah she had been the wife of Salām ibn Mishkam—Allah knows best.
He then states: “These are the eleven women with whom he consummated marriage.”
He continues: “During his caliphate, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb allotted twelve thousand to each of the Prophet’s wives, but he granted Juwayriyah and Ṣafiyyah six thousand each because they had been taken captive.”
Al-Zuhrī remarks: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, veiled them and assigned them their shares.”
I comment: We have already discussed in detail—each in its proper place—the circumstances of his, blessings and peace be upon him, marriage to every one of these women.
Al-Zuhrī further says: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married al-ʿĀliyah bint Ẓabyān ibn ʿAmr of Banū Abī Bakr ibn Kilāb; he consummated the marriage and later divorced her.”
Al-Bayhaqī notes: “That is how it appears in my copy.” Another narration states: “He did not consummate the marriage but divorced her.”
Muhammad ibn Saʿd, transmitting from Hishām ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib al-Kalbī, relates: “A man from Banū Abī Bakr ibn Kilāb told me that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married al-ʿĀliyah bint Ẓabyān ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿAbd ibn Abī Bakr ibn Kilāb; she remained with him for a long while and then he divorced her.”
