ibn Qusayy. Before him she had been married to ʿUbayd Allāh (1) ibn Jahsh ibn Riʾāb of the Banū Asad ibn Khuzaymah; he died in Abyssinia as a Christian. The Messenger of Allah then dispatched ʿAmr ibn Umayyah al-Ḍamrī to Abyssinia to propose to her on his behalf, and ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, it is said, concluded the marriage. The correct view, however, is that it was Khālid ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ (2); the Negus furnished a dowry of four hundred dinars for her on the Prophet’s behalf and sent her with Shuraḥbīl ibn Ḥasana. We have already discussed all of this at length—praise be to Allah.
He says (3): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Zaynab bint Jahsh ibn Riʾāb ibn Asad ibn Khuzaymah, whose mother was Ummaymah bint ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the Prophet’s aunt. She had previously been the wife of Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, his freedman—may Allah be pleased with him. She was the first of his wives to follow him in death and the first for whom a bier was made; Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays fashioned it for her, imitating what she had seen in Abyssinia.
He says (4): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Zaynab bint Khuzaymah of Banū Manāf ibn Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah. She was known as “Mother of the Poor.” Before him she had been the wife of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jahsh ibn Riʾāb, who was martyred at the Battle of Uhud (5). She remained with the Prophet only a short time before she herself passed away—may Allah have mercy on her.
Yūnus transmits from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq that, prior to the Prophet, she had been married to al-Ḥuṣayn ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn ʿAbd Manāf, or to his brother al-Ṭufayl ibn al-Ḥārith.
Al-Zuhrī states: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married Maymūnah bint al-Ḥārith ibn Ḥazn ibn Bujayr ibn al-Huzam ibn Ruʾaybah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir ibn Ṣaʿṣaʿah. He adds: She is the one who “offered herself” to him.
I note: The sound report is that he, peace and blessings be upon him, formally proposed to her, and that his client Abū Rāfiʿ acted as envoy between them, as we explained in detail under the ʿUmrat al-Qaḍāʾ.
Al-Zuhrī further relates that she had been married before him to two men, the first of whom was Ibn ʿAbd Yalīl. Sīf ibn ʿUmar, in his version, says she had been the wife of ʿUmayr ibn ʿAmr of the Banū ʿUqda of Thaqīf; when he died she was then married by Abū Ruhm ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn Abī Qays ibn ʿAbd Wudd ibn Naṣr ibn Mālik ibn Ḥisl ibn ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy.
He says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took captive Juwayriyah bint al-Ḥārith ibn Abī Ḍirār ibn al-Ḥārith ibn ʿĀʾidh (6) ibn Mālik ibn al-Muṣṭaliq of Khuzāʿah on the day of al-Muraysīʿ; he emancipated her and then married her. Others maintain (7) that her father al-Ḥārith—who was the leader
