She had borne him one son and one daughter. When he died, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married her; she then gave him his four daughters, followed by al-Qāsim, al-Ṭayyib, and al-Ṭāhir. All three boys passed away while still being suckled.
I note: During her lifetime the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not marry any other woman. ʿAbd al-Razzāq relates this from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who affirmed it. We have already discussed her marriage in its proper place and mentioned some of her virtues and their proofs.
Al-Zuhrī states: After Khadījah, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, married ʿĀʾishah, daughter of Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Quḥāfah ʿUthmān ibn ʿĀmir ibn ʿAmr ibn Kaʿb ibn Saʿd ibn Taym ibn Murrah ibn Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy ibn Ghālib ibn Fihr ibn Mālik ibn al-Naḍr ibn Kinānah; he took no other virgin as a wife.
I add: No child was born to him from her. Some say she miscarried a son whom the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, named ʿAbd Allāh, and for that reason she was called Umm ʿAbd Allāh. Others say her teknonym derived from ʿAbd Allāh, the son of her sister Asmāʾ by al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām, may Allah be pleased with him.
I further observe that it has been claimed—by Ibn Isḥāq and others—that he, peace and blessings be upon him, married Sawdah before ʿĀʾishah, as we have already mentioned when citing the divergent views. Allah knows best. We have previously described how he contracted both marriages before the Hijrah, whereas consummation with ʿĀʾishah took place only after the migration.
He says (2): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. She had earlier been the wife of Khunays ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Qays ibn ʿAdiyy ibn Ḥudhāfah ibn Sahm ibn ʿAmr ibn Huṣayṣ ibn Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy, who died a believer.
He says (3): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umm Salamah, Hind bint Abī Umayyah ibn al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Makhzūm. Before him she had been married to her cousin Abū Salamah ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Asad ibn Hilāl ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Makhzūm.
He says (4): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Sawdah bint Zamʿah ibn Qays ibn ʿAbd Shams ibn ʿAbd Wudd ibn Naṣr ibn Mālik ibn Ḥisl ibn ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy. She had previously been the wife of al-Sakrān ibn ʿAmr, brother of Suhayl ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Shams; he died a Muslim after the two of them returned from Abyssinia to Mecca—may Allah be pleased with them.
He says (5): The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umm Ḥabībah, Ramlah bint Abī Sufyān ibn Ḥarb ibn Umayyah ibn ʿAbd Shams ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn
