could not see it; and before we had finished burying him, we felt our hearts estranged. Al-Bayhaqī (1) reported this very wording through the same chain, and he likewise transmitted it through another group of ḥuffāẓ from Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, as we have mentioned earlier. That is the preserved version, and Allah knows best.
The eminent ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Qāsim Ibn ʿAsākir also narrated—by way of Abū Ḥafṣ Ibn Shāhīn: Ḥusayn ibn Aḥmad ibn Biṣṭām told us; Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Rawwāsī told us; Muslimah ibn ʿAlqamah told us, from Dāwūd ibn Abī Hind, from Abū Naḍrah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khuḍrī, who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—entered Madinah, everything in it shone with light; but on the day he died, everything in it was cast into darkness.”
Ibn Mājah (3) said: “Isḥāq ibn Manṣūr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAtāʾ al-ʿIjlī narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAwn, from al-Ḥasan, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, who said:
‘We were in the company of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—our faces turned in a single direction; but when he passed away, we began looking this way and that.’”
He also said (4): “Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir al-Ḥizāmī narrated to us; my maternal uncle Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn al-Muṭṭalib ibn al-Sāʾib ibn Abī Wadāʿah al-Sahmī narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī Umayyah al-Makhzūmī related to me; Muṣʿab ibn ʿAbd Allah related to me, from Umm Salamah bint Abī Umayyah, the wife of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—who said:
‘In the time of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—when a person stood to pray, none of us would let his gaze go beyond the place of his two feet. After the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—passed away, when someone rose to pray he would not let his gaze go beyond the place of his forehead. Then Abū Bakr died and ʿUmar succeeded him; during his rule, when a person stood to pray, he would not look beyond the qiblah. Then ʿUmar died and ʿUthmān became caliph; the trials then erupted, and people began turning their heads right and left.’”
Imām Aḥmad (7) said: “ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us; Ḥammād narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas:
Umm Ayman wept when the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—passed away. She was asked, ‘What makes you weep over the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him?’ She replied, ‘I knew well that the Messenger of Allah would die, but I weep for the revelation that has now been taken away from us.’” He recorded it in this abridged form.
