Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1) there is a ḥadīth transmitted by Abū ʿAwanah (2), from Hilāl al-Wazzān (3), from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—during the illness from which he passed away saying: ‘May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.’”

ʿĀʾishah added, “Had it not been for that, his grave would have been made prominent; however, he feared that it might be taken as a mosque.”

Ibn Mājah (4) reported: Maḥmūd ibn Ghailān related to us; Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim narrated to us; Mubārak ibn Faḍālah told me, from Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:

“When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died, there was in Madinah one man who dug a laḥd (a side-niche grave) and another who dug a shaqq (a simple trench). They said, ‘Let us seek our Lord’s guidance and send for them both; whichever arrives first we will leave the matter to him.’ They were both summoned, and the laḥd-digger came first, so a laḥd was made for the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

Ibn Mājah is the only one to record this wording, although Imām Aḥmad (6) also narrated it through Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim with the same content.

Ibn Mājah (7) likewise related: ʿUmar ibn Shabbah ibn ʿUbaydah (8) ibn Zayd transmitted to us; ʿUbayd ibn Ṭufayl transmitted to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Mulaykah narrated to me, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:

“When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died, they disagreed over the laḥd and the shaqq until they raised their voices. ʿUmar said, ‘Do not raise your voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah—alive or dead,’ or words to that effect. They therefore sent for both the laḥd-digger and the shaqq-digger. The laḥd-digger arrived, dug a laḥd for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and he was then buried.” Ibn Mājah alone records this report.

Imām Aḥmad (9) said: Wakiʿ narrated to us; al-ʿUmari related, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar (10), and from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: “A laḥd was dug for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” Aḥmad transmits this through these two independent chains.

(1) al-Bukhari (1390). (2) A.: “Abi Qawam,” which is a corruption. It refers to al-Waddah ibn ’Abd Allah al-Yashkuri, mawla of Yazid ibn ’Ata’, Abu Awana al-Wasiti al-Bazzaz, who narrated from Hilal al-Wazzan. He died in 176 AH. (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 11/116–120) (3) T., A.: “al-Warraq” is erroneous. He is actually Hilal ibn Abi Humayd (also called Ibn Humayd, Ibn ’Abd Allah ibn ’Abd al-Rahman or Ibn Miqlas al-Juhani). His patron was Abu ’Amr (also known as Abu Umayyah or Abu al-Jahm al-Kufi al-Sayrafi al-Jahbath al-Wazzan). He narrated from ’Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and others, and was in turn transmitted by Abu Awana and others. (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 11/77–78) (4) Sunan Ibn Majah (1557); this is an authentic (sahih) Ḥadith. (5) T.: “Allah.” (6) Musnad of Imam Ahmad (3/139). (7) Sunan Ibn Majah (1558); its isnad is weak due to the obscure narrator ’Ubayd ibn Tufayl and the weakness of his teacher ’Abd al-Rahman. (8) A., T.: the reading “Shayba ’an ’Ubaydah” is both a corruption and an error. The correct name is Shibbah ibn ’Ubaydah ibn Zayd ibn Rayita al-Nimiri, known as Abu Zayd ibn Abi Mu‘adh al-Basri, a grammarian (nahwi) and traditionist (akhbari). (See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 7/460; Taqribu-h 413) (9) Musnad of Imam Ahmad (2/24; 6/136); it is considered authentic (sahih) by other scholars. (10) T.: “’Amr wa ’an.”
