Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “No prophet is ever buried except where he dies.” They therefore moved his bedding aside and dug the grave directly beneath it, Allah bless him and grant him peace.

There is, however, a break in the chain between ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Jurayj and al-Ṣiddīq (Abū Bakr), for he did not live to meet him.

Yet al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā transmitted the report on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās and ʿĀʾishah, from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq—may Allah be pleased with him—saying:
“Abū Mūsā al-Harawī narrated to us; Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—passed away, they differed about where to bury him. Abū Bakr said, ‘I heard the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say:
“No prophet dies except in the place dearest to him.”
So bury him where he died.’ ”

Al-Tirmidhī likewise related it from Abū Kurayb, from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr al-Mulaykī, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died, they disagreed over his burial. Abū Bakr said, ‘I heard something from the Messenger of Allah that I have never forgotten:
“Allah does not take a prophet except at the spot where he must be buried.”
Therefore, bury him in the place of his bedding.’ ”
Al-Tirmidhī judged Ibn al-Mulaykī weak, yet added: “This ḥadīth has also come by other routes; it is narrated by Ibn ʿAbbās from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”

Al-Umawī reported—through his father, from Ibn Isḥāq, from a man who related it from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that Abū Bakr said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say:
‘No prophet has ever been buried except where he died.’ ”

Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Muḥammad ibn Sahl al-Tamīmī told me; Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik al-Ṭiyālisī narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“There were two grave-diggers in Madinah. When the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—died, they asked, ‘Where shall we bury him?’ Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—replied, ‘In the place where he died.’ One of the two used to dig niche-style graves (laḥd) and the other trench-style graves (shaqq). The one who dug a niche therefore came and dug a laḥd for the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
Mālik ibn Anas also transmitted this—from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father—though with an interrupted chain.

Abū Yaʿlā further said: “Jaʿfar ibn Mihrān narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd-Allah told me, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘When they set out to dig the Prophet’s—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—grave, and there was…’ ”
