gathered in large numbers.
So I asked them, “In how many pieces of cloth was the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) shrouded?”
They replied, “In three pieces of cloth, with no shirt, no qabā(1) and no turban.”
I said, “How many of your men were taken captive on the Day of Badr?”
They answered, “Al-ʿAbbās, Nawfal, and ʿAqīl.”
Al-Bayhaqī(2) also transmitted, through the chain of al-Zuhrī from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn, that he said: “The Messenger of Allah was shrouded in three pieces of cloth, one of which was a hibrah mantle.”(3)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir likewise cited the report—through a chain whose soundness is open to scrutiny—on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, who said: “I shrouded the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) in two Saḥūlī garments and a hibrah mantle.”
Abū Saʿīd ibn al-Aʿrābī(4) said: “Ibrāhīm ibn al-Walīd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Kathīr narrated to us; Hishām, from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in two rayṭ garments and a Najrānī mantle.’” The same report was transmitted by Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī from Hishām, and by ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān, both from Qatādah, from Saʿīd, from Abū Hurayrah.
Al-Rabīʿ ibn Sulaymān also narrated it from Asad ibn Mūsā; Naṣr ibn Ṭarīf; from Qatādah; reported by Ibn al-Musayyib, from Umm Salamah, that “the Messenger of Allah was shrouded in three pieces of cloth, one of them a Najrānī mantle.”
Al-Bayhaqī(5) remarked: “What has reached us from ʿĀʾishah clarifies the confusion people have had, showing that the hibrah mantle had been removed from him. Allah knows best.”
Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī further narrated, through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Khuzaymah; Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dawraqī; Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ruʾāsī; Ḥasan ibn Ṣāliḥ; from Hārūn ibn Saʿd,(6) who said: “ʿAlī possessed some musk and instructed that he be perfumed with it, saying, ‘It is part of what remained of the perfume of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace).’” He also narrated it(7) through the route of Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā, from Ḥumayd, from Ḥasan, from Hārūn, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAlī—then he mentioned it.
