the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in three white Saḥūlī pieces of cotton cloth, with no shirt and no turban. As for the mantle, people were simply mistaken about it: a mantle had indeed been bought for him (1) so that he might be shrouded in it, but it was set aside. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr then took it (2) and said, “I shall keep it for myself until I am shrouded in it.” Later he remarked, “Had Allah been pleased with it for His Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), He would have been shrouded in it.” He therefore sold it and gave its price in charity. Muslim included this report in his Ṣaḥīḥ (3) through Yaḥyā ibn Yaḥyā and others from Abū Muʿāwiyah.
Al-Bayhaqī likewise transmitted it (4) through al-Ḥākim, al-Aṣamm, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār, Abū Muʿāwiyah, Hishām, his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah was wrapped in a hibrah cloak that belonged to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr, but it was removed from him. ʿAbd Allāh had kept that mantle for himself so that he might be shrouded in it when he died, yet after holding on to it he said, ‘I will never keep for myself something that Allah prevented His Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) from being shrouded in,’ and ʿAbd Allāh gave its value in charity.”
Imām Aḥmad (5) said: ʿAbd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Maʿmar from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in three white Saḥūlī garments.” Al-Nasāʾī (6) also recorded it from Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh, from ʿAbd al-Razzaq.
Imām Aḥmad further said (7): Miskīn ibn Bukayr narrated to us, from Saʿīd—meaning Ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz—who said: Makḥūl related to me from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in three Yemeni riyāṭ cloths. Aḥmad alone records this report.
Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī reported: Sahl ibn Ḥabīb al-Anṣārī narrated to us; ʿĀṣim ibn Hilāl, the imām of the mosque of Ayyūb, narrated to us; Ayyūb from Nāfiʿ from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in three white Saḥūlī garments.”
Sufyān likewise reported from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUbayd Allah, from Sālim, from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was shrouded in three garments, while some narrations add that they were two Suḥārī cloths (9) together with a hibrah mantle.
