Ibn ʿAbbās said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away at the age of sixty-three.” The same wording is reported through Abū Naḍrah, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab, from Ibn ʿAbbās. This view is the most widely known and the one held by the majority.
Imām Aḥmad (1) said: “Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ; ʿAmmār, the client of Banū Hāshim, related to me: I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say, ‘The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away at the age of sixty-five.’” Muslim (2) also recorded it through Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ.
Aḥmad (3) further said: “Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAmmār ibn Abī ʿAmmār (4), from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) remained in Mecca for fifteen years—eight (or seven) years during which he would see the light and hear the voice, and eight (or seven) years during which revelation came to him—and he lived in Madinah for ten.” Muslim (5) transmitted the same through Ḥammād ibn Salamah.
Aḥmad (6) also said: “ʿAffān narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us; Yūnus narrated to us, from ʿAmmār, the client of Banū Hāshim, who said: I asked Ibn ʿAbbās, ‘How many years had the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) reached when he died?’ He replied, ‘I did not think someone like you among his people would be unaware of that.’ I said, ‘I have asked others and received conflicting answers, so I wished to know your view.’ He said, ‘Can you count?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Then keep tally: forty years for which he was sent, fifteen years he spent in Mecca—experiencing both security and fear—and ten years after his migration in Madinah.’ Muslim (8) narrated it likewise from Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ and Shuʿbah ibn al-Ḥajjāj, both from Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, from ʿAmmār, from Ibn ʿAbbās.
Imām Aḥmad (9) said: “Ibn Numayr narrated to us; al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, that a man came to Ibn ʿAbbās and said, ‘Revelation was sent down upon the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) ten years in Mecca and ten years in Madinah.’ He replied, ‘Who says that? Revelation was sent down upon him in Mecca for fifteen years and in Madinah for ten—sixty-five years and more.’” This chain and text are unique to Aḥmad.
Imām Aḥmad (10) also said: “Hushaym narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: ‘The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was taken in death at the age of sixty-five.’” This report is recorded solely by Aḥmad.
