Ibn al-Barbarī and Nāfiʿ ibn Abī Nuʿaym likewise transmitted it from Rabīʿah, from Anas with the same wording. He added:
“What is reliably preserved from Rabīʿah, on the authority of Anas, is: ‘Sixty.’ ”
Ibn ʿAsākir then cited the report through the chains of Mālik, al-Awzāʿī, Misʿar, Ibrāhīm ibn Ṭahmān, ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, Sulaymān ibn Bilāl (1), Anas ibn ʿIyāḍ, al-Darāwardī, and Muḥammad ibn Qays al-Madani—all of them from Rabīʿah, from Anas—who said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away at the age of sixty.”
Al-Bayhaqī (2) relates: Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Bishrān informed us; Abū ʿAmr ibn al-Sammāk informed us; Ḥanbal ibn Isḥāq informed us; Abū Maʿmar ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr informed us; ʿAbd al-Wārith informed us; and Abū Ghālib al-Bāhilī said:
“I asked Anas ibn Mālik, ‘At what age was the Messenger of Allah when he was sent?’ He replied, ‘He was forty years old.’ I asked, ‘And what followed?’ He said, ‘He remained in Mecca for ten years and in Madinah for ten years, so that sixty years were completed for him on the day Allah took him—while he was among the strongest, most handsome, most beautiful, and fullest-bodied of men.’ ”
Imām Aḥmad (4) also transmitted this report through ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith, from his father, with the same wording.
Muslim (5) recorded—from Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr al-Rāzī, nicknamed Zunayj (6); from Ḥakkām ibn Salīm (7); from ʿUthmān ibn Zāʾidah; from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAdī; from Anas ibn Mālik—who said: “The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away at the age of sixty-three; Abu Bakr passed away at the age of sixty-three; and ʿUmar passed away at the age of sixty-three.” Muslim alone records this narration. It does not contradict what has preceded from Anas, for the Arabs often drop the inflectional kasrah.
Both Ṣaḥīḥs (9) likewise contain the report of al-Layth ibn Saʿd, from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away at the age of sixty-three.” Al-Zuhrī added: “Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab told me the same.”
Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, ʿUqayl, Yūnus ibn Yazīd, and Ibn Jurayj likewise transmitted it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah
