Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away after twelve nights of Rabīʿ al-Awwal had elapsed, on the very day he had first entered Madinah as an emigrant, having completed ten full years of his Hijrah.”
Al-Wāqidī remarked: “This is the view we have established,” and his scribe Muḥammad ibn Saʿd endorsed it as well(1).
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān(2) narrated—from Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, from al-Layth—that he said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) died on a Monday, after one night of Rabīʿ al-Awwal had passed; it was the same Monday on which he had entered Madinah, exactly ten years earlier.”
Saʿd ibn Ibrāhīm al-Zuhrī said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) died on a Monday, after two nights of Rabīʿ al-Awwal had passed, completing ten years from his arrival in Madinah.” Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted this report, and al-Wāqidī related it as well—from Abū Maʿshar, from Muḥammad ibn Qays—in identical form. Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ held the same opinion.
Abū Nuʿaym al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn stated: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) died on a Monday, at the very beginning of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the eleventh year from his arrival in Madinah”(3). Ibn ʿAsākir(4) also transmitted this. Similar reports were cited earlier from ʿUrwah, Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah, and al-Zuhrī in the passages taken from their Maghāzī. Allah knows best, yet the view of Ibn Isḥāq and al-Wāqidī is the most renowned.
Al-Wāqidī(5) likewise transmitted—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās and ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with them both)—saying: “Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd related to me from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās; and Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh related to me from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah. Both reported: ‘The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) passed away on a Monday, after twelve nights of Rabīʿ al-Awwal had elapsed.’”
Ibn Isḥāq(6) similarly narrated—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Bakr ibn Ḥazm, from his father—the same wording, adding: “He was buried on the night preceding Wednesday.”
Saif ibn ʿUmar reported—from Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿArzamī, from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās—that he said: “When the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) had completed the Farewell Pilgrimage, he departed, came to Madinah, remained there for the rest of Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and throughout Muḥarram and Ṣafar, and then died on Monday, after ten nights of Rabīʿ al-Awwal had passed.” He also transmitted it from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah; and in the narration of Fāṭimah, from ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah it is the same—except that Ibn ʿAbbās begins with: “after several days of it had elapsed,” while ʿĀʾishah said: “after some days of it had passed.”
