This report comes through Zayd ibn Rufayʿ, from Makḥūl al-Shāmī, who said: “This is what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib when he returned from the expedition of Ḥunayn and Sūrat al-Naṣr had been revealed to him.”
Al-Bayhaqī added: “He then mentioned a lengthy narration about the coming tribulation, but it too is denounced; it has no basis, and the sound ḥadīths are sufficient. Allah alone grants success.”
Let us here give a brief biographical note on Ḥammād ibn ʿAmr Abū Ismāʿīl al-Naṣībī (1). He reported from al-Aʿmash and others, and his transmitters include Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā, Muḥammad ibn Mihrān, Mūsā ibn Ayyūb, and others. Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn (2) said: “He is among those who lie and fabricate ḥadīth.” ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī al-Fallās and Abū Ḥātim (3) said: “His reports are repudiated; he is extremely weak.” Ibrāhīm ibn Yaʿqūb al-Jawzajānī said: “He used to lie.” Al-Bukhārī (4) said: “His ḥadīth is rejected.” Abū Zurʿah said: “Feeble ḥadīth.” Al-Nasāʾī (5) said: “Abandoned.” Ibn Ḥibbān (6) said: “He fabricates ḥadīth outright.” Ibn ʿAdī (7) said: “Most of his narrations are of the sort that no trustworthy narrator corroborates.” Al-Dāraqutnī (8) said: “Weak.” Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh concluded: “He transmits fabricated reports from reliable narrators; he is utterly discredited.”
As for the ḥadīth of which al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī (9) said: “Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ related to us; Ḥamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās al-ʿAqabī in Baghdad narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rūḥ al-Madāʾinī narrated to us; Salām ibn Sulaymān al-Madāʾinī narrated to us; Salām ibn Sulaym al-Ṭawīl narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from al-Ḥasan al-ʿUrani (10), from al-Ashʿath ibn Ṭalīq, from Murrah ibn Shurayḥ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
‘When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill, we gathered in the house of ʿĀʾishah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at us and tears filled his eyes. He then said, “The time of parting has drawn near,” and he foretold his own passing to us. Then he said:
“Welcome! May Allah preserve you, guide you, grant you victory, benefit you, give you success, set you on the right course, protect you, aid you, and accept you. I advise you to fear Allah. I entrust you to Allah and appoint Him as my successor over you. I am a clear warner from Him to you that you must not behave arrogantly toward Allah regarding His servants or His lands; for Allah has said to me and to you:
‘That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltation in the earth, nor…’”
