And Aḥmad (1) said: “Bakr ibn ʿĪsā al-Rāsibī narrated to us; ʿUmar ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us, from Nuʿaym ibn Yazīd, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me to bring him a tablet (2) on which he could write something that would keep his community from going astray after him. Fearing that his very soul might depart before I returned, I said, “I have a sound memory and understanding.” He then advised: “I enjoin you to observe the prayer, to give the zakāh, and to treat well those whom your right hands possess.”’
Aḥmad alone transmitted this through this chain.
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān (3) said: “Abū al-Nuʿmān Muḥammad ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us; Abū ʿAwnah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Safīnah, from Umm Salamah, who said:
‘The foremost counsel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the time of his death was: “The prayer, the prayer—and those whom your right hands possess,” until he was gasping it within his chest and his tongue could scarcely utter it.’”
Al-Nasāʾī (5) likewise reported it from Ḥumayd ibn Masʿadah, from Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ, from Saʿīd (6) ibn Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, that (7) Safīnah related it from Umm Salamah.
Al-Bayhaqī (8) said: “The sound version is that reported by ʿAffān, from Hammām, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Khalīl, from Safīnah, from Umm Salamah.” Al-Nasāʾī (9) and Ibn Mājah (10) likewise recorded it through the narration of Yazīd ibn Hārūn, from Hammām, from Qatādah, from Ṣāliḥ Abū al-Khalīl, from Safīnah, from Umm Salamah (11).
Aḥmad (12) also said: “Yūnus narrated to us; (13) al-Layth narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn al-Hād, from Mūsā ibn Sarjis, from al-Qāsim, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was dying, and beside him was a cup of water. He would dip his hand into the cup, wipe his face with the water, and say, “O Allah, help me against the throes of death.”’”
This was likewise related by al-Tirmidhī (14) and al-Nasāʾī (15).
