“He is a tender-hearted man; whenever he stands in your place he will be unable (1) to lead the people in prayer.”
He replied, “Command Abū Bakr to lead the people in prayer, for you women are like the companions of Joseph.” So Abū Bakr led the prayers during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Imām Aḥmad (2) also reports: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us; Zāʾidah narrated to us; from Mūsā ibn Abī ʿĀʾishah; from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said:
“I went in to see ʿĀʾishah and said, ‘Will you not relate to me the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?’ She replied, ‘Indeed. When the Messenger (3) of Allah ﷺ became gravely ill he asked, “Have the people prayed?” We said (4), “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Pour some (5) water for me into the wash-basin (6).” We did so.’ ʿĀʾishah continued: ‘He bathed, then tried to rise (7) but fainted. When he regained consciousness he asked, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Pour (8) water for me into the wash-basin.” We did so, he bathed again, then tried to rise but fainted, and when he revived he asked, “Have the people prayed?” We said, “No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.” (9)
‘The people were gathered in the mosque awaiting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for the night prayer. He therefore sent word to Abū Bakr to lead them. Abū Bakr was a gentle man, so he said, “O ʿUmar, lead the people in prayer.” ʿUmar replied, “You are more entitled to it,” and Abū Bakr led them during those days.
‘Not long afterwards the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt some relief and came out for the Ẓuhr prayer supported by two men, one of them al-ʿAbbās. When Abū Bakr saw him he started to step back, but the Prophet ﷺ signalled him not to withdraw. He ordered the two men to seat him beside Abū Bakr, so Abū Bakr prayed standing while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed sitting.’
ʿUbayd Allāh said: ‘I later visited Ibn ʿAbbās and said, “Shall I relate to you what ʿĀʾishah told me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said, “Go ahead.” I narrated it to him, and he did not object to any of it, except that he asked, “Did she name for you the man who was with al-ʿAbbās?” I said, “No.” He said, “It was ʿAlī.”’
Both al-Bukhārī (10) and Muslim (11) recorded this report through Aḥmad ibn Yūnus from Zāʾidah.
In another version: ‘Abū Bakr led the people following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah while standing; the people followed the prayer of Abū Bakr, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed seated.’
