Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Al-Bukhārī (1) said: It was also narrated by Ibn Abī al-Zinād, from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, from the Prophet ﷺ.

Al-Bukhārī (2) further stated: Yūnus related—through al-Zuhrī, who said that ʿUrwah reported—that ʿĀʾishah said:

“During the illness in which he died, the Prophet ﷺ would say, ‘O ʿĀʾishah, I still feel the pain of the food I ate at Khaybar, and now is the time when I sense my aorta being severed because of that poison.’”

Al-Bukhārī cited this report in suspended form, and al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Bayhaqī supplied its full chain: from al-Ḥākim, from Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Yaḥyā al-Ashqar, from Yūsuf ibn Mūsā, from Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ, from ʿAnbasah, from Yūnus ibn Yazīd al-Aylī, from al-Zuhrī, with this wording.

Al-Bayhaqī (3) also said: Al-Ḥākim narrated to us; al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to us; from Abū Muʿāwiyah; from al-Aʿmash; from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Murrah; from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ; from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:

“Swearing nine oaths that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was killed—meaning martyred—is dearer to me than swearing a single oath that he was not, for Allah chose him as a Prophet and chose him as a martyr.”

Al-Bukhārī (4) also said: Isḥāq related to us; Bishr ibn Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamzah (5) reported to us; my father narrated to me; from al-Zuhrī, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kaʿb ibn Mālik al-Anṣārī—while Kaʿb ibn Mālik was one of the three whose repentance was accepted—told me that ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās informed him that ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib emerged from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the illness in which he died.

The people asked, “O Abū al-Ḥasan, how is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ this morning?”

He replied, “Praise be to Allah, he is recovering.”

Al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib then took him by the hand and said, “By Allah, in three days you will be a subject of the staff (i.e., under another’s authority). By Allah, I can see that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will soon pass away from this illness; I recognize the faces of the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib at the time of death. Let us go to the Messenger of Allah and ask him about this matter (leadership). If it is destined for us, we will know it; and if it is meant for someone else, we will know and he will counsel regarding us.”

ʿAlī replied, “By Allah, if we ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it and he denies it to us, people will never give it to us after him. By Allah, I will not ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it.”

This narration is reported exclusively by al-Bukhārī.

(1) After hadith no. 4458. (2) al-Bukhari (no. 4428) transmits it with a muʿallaq (suspended) isnad (chain); it has supporting reports strengthening it. See Fath al-Bari, 8:131. (3) Dalāʾil al-Nubuwwa, 7:172; al-Hakim, 3:58—and its isnad is weak. (4) al-Bukhari, no. 4447. (5) Variant readings: – Printed edition: “Ishaq ibn Bishr narrated to us; Shuayb narrated from Abu Hamza.” – Alternative: “Ishaq ibn Bishr ibn Shuayb ibn Abu Hamza narrated to us.” Ibn Hajar notes that Bishr ibn Shuayb ibn Abu Hamza—known as Dinar al-Qurashi, the mawla of Abu al-Qasim al-Himsi—narrated from his father; al-Bukhari records him elsewhere. He was also transmitted by al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasa’i via Ishaq without full attribution and appears to be the same person as al-Kusaj (Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 1:45). (6) This is an ancient Arabic proverb, which I included under the entry “ʿAbd–ʿAṣa” in the Dictionary of Arabic Proverbs. Its sources there are: – Majmaʿ al-Amthal (al-Maydani, 2:19) – al-Fakhr (p. 192) – al-Mustaqsa (2:398) – Thimar al-Qulub fī al-Muḍāf wa al-Mansūb (2:895) Ibn Hajar says in Fath al-Bari (8:143): “It is a metaphor for someone who becomes dependent on another; literally, ‘he dies after three and you are ordered to care for him.’ This illustrates al-ʿAbbas’s keen insight.”
