Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “It was ʿAlī.”
ʿĀʾishah, the Prophet’s wife ﷺ, used to recount: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered my house and his pain had intensified, he said, ‘Pour over me seven water-skins whose knots have not yet been untied, so that I may address the people.’ We seated him in a wash-basin belonging to Ḥafṣah, another wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and began to pour the contents of those skins over him. We continued until he started signaling to us with his hand that we had done enough.
“After that he went out to the people, led them in prayer, and delivered a sermon.” Al-Bukhārī (1) relates this report in several places of his Ṣaḥīḥ, and Muslim (2) transmits it through various chains from al-Zuhrī.
Al-Bukhārī also said (3): Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated; Hishām ibn ʿUrwah said, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah:
During the illness in which he passed away, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept asking, “Where shall I be tomorrow? Where shall I be tomorrow?”—meaning the turn of ʿĀʾishah. His wives permitted him to stay wherever he wished, so he remained in ʿĀʾishah’s house until he died there.
ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—said: “He died on the very day he would normally spend with me, in my house. Allah took him while his head was between my chest and neck, and his saliva mingled with mine.
“ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakr then came in holding a siwāk with which he was cleaning his teeth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at it, so I said, ‘Give me that siwāk, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān.’ He handed it to me; I chewed it and softened it, then gave it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he used it while leaning against my chest.” Al-Bukhārī alone records this wording.
Al-Bukhārī further said (5): ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; al-Layth narrated; Ibn al-Hād informed me, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ died while he was between my ḥāqinah and dhāqinah—between my chest and chin—so I shall never dread the severity of death for anyone after the Prophet ﷺ.”
Al-Bukhārī also said (7): Ḥibbān narrated to us (8); ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Yūnus narrated from Ibn Shihāb, who said: ʿUrwah told me that ʿĀʾishah related:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ felt ill, he would blow over himself with the chapters of refuge (the Muʿawwidhāt) and wipe his body with his hand. But when he was afflicted with the sickness that led to his death, I began to blow over him with the same Muʿawwidhāt he used to recite, and I would wipe him with his own hand…"
