to my house and spend the night there with one of your other wives.”
She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled, yet his pain kept increasing. He continued to go round to each of his wives until the illness overcame him in the apartment of Maymūnah. He then summoned his wives and asked their permission to be nursed in my house, and they agreed.
She added: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out leaning on two men from his family—one was al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās and the other a man with his head bound—his feet dragging along the ground until he entered my room. ʿUbayd Allāh said: I related this to Ibn ʿAbbās, who asked, “Do you know who the other man was? It was ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.” This report has corroborating chains that will appear shortly.
Al-Bayhaqī said (2): al-Ḥākim narrated to us; al-Aṣamm narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Bukayr, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah told me, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿĀʾishah—may Allah be pleased with her—who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered while he was suffering from a headache, and I too was complaining of my head. I exclaimed, ‘Oh, my head!’ He replied, ‘Rather, by Allah, ʿĀʾishah, it is I who must say “Oh, my head!”’ He then said, ‘What would it matter to you if you were to die before me? I would attend to you—wash you, shroud you, pray over you, and bury you.’ I said, ‘By Allah, I imagine that were that to happen, you would come back and be alone with one of your wives in my house toward the end of the day.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed, but his pain continued to mount until it became severe while he was moving about among his wives in Maymūnah’s apartment.
“His relatives gathered around him, and al-ʿAbbās said, ‘We think the Messenger of Allah has pleurisy; come, let us give him the ludd medicine.’ So they administered it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to and asked, ‘Who did this to me?’ They replied, ‘Your uncle al-ʿAbbās feared you might have pleurisy.’ He said, ‘That is a remedy of Satan, and Allah would never give him power over me. Let no one remain in this house except that he be given the ludd, apart from my uncle al-ʿAbbās.’ Thus everyone in the house was given the ludd, even Maymūnah, though she was fasting, and that was before the very eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
“He then sought his wives’ permission to be treated in my house, and they granted it. He came out leaning on al-ʿAbbās and another man whom she did not name, his feet trailing on the ground. ʿUbayd Allāh added that Ibn ʿAbbās said, ‘The other man was ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.’
Al-Bukhārī said (5): Saʿīd ibn ʿUfayr related to us; al-Layth related to us; ʿUqayl related to me from Ibn Shihāb, who informed me that ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUtbah said: ʿĀʾishah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said, ‘When the Messenger of Allah became gravely ill and his pain intensified, he asked his wives for permission to be nursed in my house, and they granted it. He then came out leaning on two men, his feet dragging on the ground, between al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and another man.’ ʿUbayd Allāh said: I informed ʿAbd Allāh—meaning Ibn ʿAbbās—of what ʿĀʾishah had said. ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās asked me, ‘Do you know who the other man was whom ʿĀʾishah did not name?’ I replied, ‘No.’ Ibn—
