You still pin your hopes on him after the leaders have been slain,
just as one might hope for the leaves of a scorched tree.
Is there not a proud man who will seize a heedless moment
and cut short the hope of the hopeful?
Hassān ibn Thābit replied to her, saying:
The sons of Wāʾil, the sons of Wāqif,
and Khaṭmah as well, all rank beneath the Banū Khazraj.
Whenever—woe to her—she cries out in reckless folly
for her menfolk, death hastens to answer.
She provoked a valiant youth of noble line—
honourable in both his coming and his going.
He drenched her in streaming blood
once the stillness of night had settled, feeling no remorse.
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was told of this he said, “Who will rid me of the daughter of Marwān?” ʿUmayr ibn ʿAdī heard the call, and that very night he stole upon her and killed her.
The next morning he came and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have killed her.” He replied, “You have supported Allah and His Messenger, O ʿUmayr.” ʿUmayr asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is there any liability upon me because of her?” He said, “Not even two goats will lock horns over her.”
ʿUmayr returned to his clan while they were debating her death—she had five sons—and declared, “I am the one who killed her. Plot against me all of you, and do not delay.” That was the first day Islam gained ascendancy among the Banū Khaṭmah; many of them embraced the faith when they saw the strength Allah had granted it.
The author then alludes to the expedition that captured Thumāmah ibn Uthāl al-Ḥanafī and the story of his conversion—already recorded in the sound ḥadīth collections.
Ibn Hishām adds that it was concerning Thumāmah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A believer eats with one intestine, whereas a disbeliever eats with seven,” for he ate very little after accepting Islam. When he left Madinah he entered Mecca to perform ʿumrah, proclaiming the talbiyah aloud. The Meccans tried to silence him, but he refused and threatened to cut off their provisions from al-Yamāmah. On his return he did withhold supplies until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wrote to him, whereupon he resumed sending them.
A poet of Banū Ḥanīfah boasted:
Among us is the man who entered Mecca in consecration, chanting the talbiyah—
scorning Abū Sufyān—in the sacred months.
