and he kept repeating it until I wished (1) I had not embraced Islam before that. The ḥadith has already been cited above.
ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ was dispatched (2) to Dhāt al-Salāsil in the land of Banū ʿUḍrah to rouse the Arabs for the Syrian front, for the mother of al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil was from the tribe of Balī. For that reason the Prophet sent ʿAmr to mobilize them, hoping he would be more effective among his kin. When he reached one of their watering places called al-Salsal he became apprehensive, so he asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for reinforcements. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then sent him (3) a detachment that included Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, placing Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ in command. When they arrived, ʿAmr assumed authority over them all (4) and said, “You have only been sent as support for me.” Abū ʿUbaydah did not object, for he was a gentle, easy-going man to whom worldly matters were of little concern (5); he yielded and followed ʿAmr’s lead, and ʿAmr led them all in prayer.
Because of this, when he returned he asked, “Messenger of Allah, who is dearest to you among the people?” He replied, “ʿĀʾishah.” He said, “And among men (6)?” He answered, “Her father.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ḥadrad was dispatched (7) to the valley of Iḍam before the Conquest of Mecca; the incident of Muḥallim ibn Jaththāmah occurred there, and it has already been narrated in detail under the events of year seven.
Ibn Abī Ḥadrad was also sent (8) to al-Ghābah.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf was dispatched (9) to Dūmat al-Jandal.
Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq said: I was informed by someone I do not suspect, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, who said: I heard a man from Basra ask ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb about letting the tail of one’s turban hang down the back when putting it on. ʿAbd Allāh replied, “If Allah wills, I will inform you about that. He said, “Messenger of Allah, which of the believers is best?” He replied, “The one with the finest character.” He then asked, “Which…"
