At Khaybar, al-Yasīr regretted having set out, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays, realizing that al-Yasīr was reaching for his sword, struck him with his own blade and severed his foot. Al-Yasīr in turn hit him on the head with a wooden spike made from shawḥaṭ, splitting his scalp. Each Muslim then turned on the Jew who had accompanied him and killed him, except for one man who managed to flee on foot. When Ibn Unays returned, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spat upon his wound, and it neither festered nor caused him any pain.
I (the author) say: I think the other expedition to Khaybar took place when the Prophet ﷺ sent him as an assessor of the date-palm yields at Khaybar; Allah knows best.
The Prophet ﷺ also dispatched ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAtīk and his companions to Khaybar, where they killed Abū Rāfiʿ the Jew.
He sent ʿAbd Allāh ibn Unays to Khalid ibn Sufyān ibn Nubayḥ, and Ibn Unays killed him at ʿUrana. Ibn Isḥāq relates the story here at length, and we have already mentioned it under the events of year five; Allah knows best.
(He sent Zayd ibn Ḥārithah, Jaʿfar, and ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rawāḥah to Muʾtah in the Syrian lands, and they were martyred as previously described. He also dispatched Kaʿb ibn ʿAmīr) to Dhat Aṭlāḥ in the region of Syria, and they too were all killed.
He dispatched ʿUyaynah ibn Ḥiṣn ibn Ḥudhayfah ibn Badr against Banū al-ʿAnbar of Tamīm. He raided them and captured a number of people. Their delegation then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the captives; he freed some of them and ransomed others.
He likewise sent Ghālib ibn ʿAbd Allāh against the territory of Banū Murrah. There Mirdās ibn Nahīk—an ally of theirs from the Ḥuraqah clan of Juhaynah—was overtaken by Usāmah ibn Zayd and a man from the Anṣār. When they raised their weapons against him, he declared, “There is no god but Allah.” Upon their return, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reproached them severely, and they excused themselves by saying that he had uttered the phrase only to shield himself from death.
He said to Usāmah, “Why did you not split open his heart?” and he kept repeating to him, “What will you do about ‘There is no god but Allah’ on the Day of Resurrection?” Usāmah replied:
