Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Abd Allāh ibn Aḥmad said: “ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-Qawārīrī related to me; Yūnus ibn Arqam related to us; Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād related to us, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā:

I was present with ʿAlī in the square of al-Raḥbah when he was calling the people to testify. He proclaimed, ‘I adjure by Allah anyone who heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm say, “Whoever’s patron I am, ʿAlī is his patron,” to rise and bear witness.’

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān continued: Twelve men who had fought at Badr stood up—I can almost see each of them before me—and declared, ‘We testify that we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm say: “Am I not nearer to the believers than they are to themselves, and are not my wives their mothers?” We replied, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He then said: “Whoever’s patron I am, ʿAlī is his patron. O Allah, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.”’ The chain of transmission for this report is weak and unusual.

Abd Allāh ibn Aḥmad also said: “Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar al-Wakīʿī related to us; Zayd ibn Ḥubbāb related to us; al-Walīd ibn ʿUqbah ibn Nazār al-ʿAnsī related to us; Simāk ibn ʿUbayd ibn al-Walīd al-ʿAnsī informed us:

I entered upon ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, and he told me that he had witnessed ʿAlī in the square of al-Raḥbah saying, ‘I adjure by Allah every man who heard and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm to stand—no one should rise except someone who actually saw him.’ Twelve men rose and said, ‘We saw him and we heard him when he took ʿAlī’s hand and declared:

“O Allah, befriend those who befriend him, oppose those who oppose him, support those who support him, and forsake those who forsake him.”’

All stood except for three who remained seated; ʿAlī invoked a supplication against them, and his supplication overtook them. This report is likewise transmitted by ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿĀmir al-Thaʿlabī and others, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā.

Ibn Jarīr said: ‘Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr related to us; Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī related to us …’

Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim likewise transmitted—from Sulaymān al-Ghaylānī, from Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī—that Kathīr ibn Zayd related to us: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī told me, from his father, from ʿAlī, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted beneath the tree at Khumm … and he recounted the event, which included the words, ‘Whoever’s patron I am, ʿAlī is his patron.’ Some narrators transmit it from Abū ʿĀmir, from Kathīr, from Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī, from ʿAlī, with a break in the chain.

Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAmr al-Bajalī—who is weak—reported from Misʿar, from Ṭalḥah ibn Muṣarrif, from ʿUmayrah ibn … (text ends).
