They therefore testified that they had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say to ʿAlī on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm:
“Is Allah not nearer to the believers than they are to themselves?”
They replied, “Indeed.”
He then said, “O Allah, whomever I am his patron, ʿAlī is his patron. O Allah, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.”
ʿAbd Allāh added: ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAmrū Dhī Mur with a report like that of Abū Isḥāq—meaning from Saʿīd and Zayd—but with the additional words:
“Support those who support him and forsake those who forsake him.”
ʿAbd Allāh also said: ʿAlī narrated to us; Shurayk narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ḥabīb ibn Abī Thābit, from Abū al-Ṭufayl, from Zayd ibn Arqam, from the Prophet ﷺ in similar terms.
Al-Nasaʾī, in his work The Special Merits of ʿAlī, related: al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥurayth narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Wahb, who said:
At al-Raḥbah ʿAlī proclaimed, “I adjure by Allah any man who heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm say: ‘Allah is my Protector—and I am the protector of the believers. Whomever I am his protector, this man is his protector. O Allah, befriend those who befriend him, oppose those who oppose him, and support those who support him.’”
Shuʿbah likewise transmitted it from Abū Isḥāq, and this chain is sound.
Al-Nasaʾī also reported it through Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAmrū Dhī Mur, who said:
ʿAlī summoned the people at al-Raḥbah; a number of men stood up and bore witness that they had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm say:
“Whomever I am his patron, ʿAlī is his patron. O Allah, befriend those who befriend him, oppose those who oppose him, love those who love him, hate those who hate him, and support those who support him.”
Ibn Jarīr likewise narrated it—from Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Isrāʾīl, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Wahb and ʿAbd Khayr, from ʿAlī. He also transmitted it from Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā—a trustworthy but Shīʿī transmitter—from Fiṭr ibn Khalīfah, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Wahb, Zayd ibn Yuthayʿ, and ʿAmrū Dhī Mur: that ʿAlī adjured the people in Kūfa … and he mentioned the tradition.
