ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān—through ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit—from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib, reported:
“We accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. While we were on the way, he halted, ordered that the call be made, ‘Gather for prayer,’ then took ʿAlī’s hand and said:
‘Am I not nearer to the believers than they are to themselves?’
They replied, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘Am I not nearer to every believer than his own self?’
They replied, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘Then this man is the patron of everyone of whom I am patron. O God, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.’”
ʿAbd al-Razzāq likewise transmitted it from Maʿmar, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, from ʿAdiyy, from al-Barāʾ.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī and al-Ḥasan ibn Sufyān said: Hudbah related to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah related to us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd and Abū Hārūn, from ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ, who said:
“We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage. When we came to Ghadīr Khumm, a place was cleared for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ beneath two trees, and the proclamation was made among the people, ‘Gather for prayer.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned ʿAlī, took him by the hand, and stood him at his right side, then said:
‘Am I not nearer to every person than his own self?’
They answered, ‘Indeed.’
He said, ‘Then this man is the patron of everyone of whom I am patron. O God, befriend those who befriend him and oppose those who oppose him.’”
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb then met him and said, “Congratulations! Morning and evening you are the patron of every believing man and woman.”
Ibn Jarīr narrated it as well—from Abū Zurʿah, from Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd and Abū Hārūn al-ʿAbdī—both of whom are weak—through ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit, from al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib. Ibn Jarīr also related it through Mūsā ibn ʿUthmān al-Ḥaḍramī—who is extremely weak—from Abū Isḥāq al-Sibāʿī, from al-Barāʾ and Zayd ibn Arqam; and God knows best.
Imam Aḥmad said: Ibn Numayr narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Kindī, from Zādhān Abū ʿUmar, who said:
“I heard ʿAlī at al-Raḥbah proclaiming to the people, ‘Whoever witnessed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm saying what he said, let him stand and testify!’ Twelve men stood up and bore witness that they had heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘Whomever I am his mawlā, ʿAlī is his mawlā.’”
Aḥmad alone transmitted it, and Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm is unknown.
ʿAbd Allāh, son of Imam Aḥmad, said in the Musnad of his father: ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm al-Awdi narrated to us; Shurayk informed us, from Abū Isḥāq, from Saʿīd ibn Wahb and Zayd ibn Yuthayʿ, who said:
“ʿAlī proclaimed to the people at al-Raḥbah, ‘Whoever heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ speak on the Day of Ghadīr Khumm, let him rise!’ Six men from Saʿīd’s side stood up, and six from Zayd’s side…”
