At the close of that report he added, “Ibn ʿUmar used to do the same.” Abū Dāwūd (1) transmitted this wording as well through Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal.
Al-Bukhārī (2) said: “Al-Ḥumaydī related to us; al-Walīd related to us; al-Awzāʿī related to us; al-Zuhrī told me from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, ‘Tomorrow, the Day of Sacrifice at Minā, we shall camp in the valley of Banū Kinānah, the place where they once swore together upon disbelief’—meaning al-Muḥaṣṣab.” Muslim (3) narrated the same ḥadīth through Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb, from al-Walīd ibn Muslim, from al-Awzāʿī, with identical wording.
Imām Aḥmad (4) said: “ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar informed us from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān, from Usāmah ibn Zayd, who said: I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah ﷺ, where will you lodge tomorrow?’—that was during his Farewell Pilgrimage. He replied, ‘Has ʿAqīl left us any house to stay in?’ and then said, ‘Tomorrow, if Allah wills, we shall alight in the valley of Banū Kinānah’—that is, al-Muḥaṣṣab—‘the spot where Quraysh once divided up in their pact upon disbelief.’ The clan of Kinānah had allied with Quraysh against Banū Hāshim, pledging that they would neither marry into them, nor trade with them, nor give them shelter—meaning until they surrendered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then he declared, ‘A Muslim does not inherit from a disbeliever, nor does a disbeliever inherit from a Muslim.’ Al-Zuhrī added, ‘Al-Khayf means the valley.’ Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim (5) included this ḥadīth through the chain of ʿAbd al-Razzāq.
These two narrations show that the Prophet ﷺ deliberately chose to camp at al-Muḥaṣṣab in defiance of the conspiracy that the pagan Quraysh forged when they drafted the document boycotting Banū Hāshim and Banū al-Muṭṭalib until they handed him over, as we have explained elsewhere. He likewise alighted there in the year of the Conquest. According to this view, encamping at that site is a recommended Sunnah, and this is one of the two scholarly positions.
Al-Bukhārī (6) also said: “Abū Nuʿaym related to us; Sufyān related to us from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: ‘It was merely a place where the Prophet ﷺ camped because it made his departure easier’—meaning al-Abṭaḥ.” Muslim (7) recorded the same report from Hishām.
Abū Dāwūd (8) likewise transmitted—through Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, from Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd, from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah—[who] said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ only stayed at al-Muḥaṣṣab because it facilitated his departure; it is not a Sunnah. Whoever wishes may encamp there, and whoever wishes may refrain.”
