the Messenger of Allah ﷺ riding a gray mule while ʿAlī conveyed his words. Abū Dāwūd (1) also narrated it through Abū Muʿāwiyah, from Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir.
Abū Dāwūd then said (2): “Chapter: What the imām should mention in his sermon at Minā.” Musaddad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us; from Ḥumayd al-Aʿraj; from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī; from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muʿādh al-Taymī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us while we were at Minā. Our hearing was opened so clearly that we could listen to every word even from our lodgings. He went on teaching them their rites until he came to the stoning of the pillars; he joined his two index fingers (3) and said, ‘With pebbles used for slinging.’ He then ordered the Emigrants to camp at the front of the mosque and the Helpers to camp behind it; after that, the rest of the people settled in their places.”
Imām Aḥmad (4) reported it from ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith, from his father, and al-Nasāʾī (5) recorded it from Ibn al-Mubārak, from ʿAbd al-Wārith in the same way. The earlier narration of Imām Aḥmad (6) has already been cited, through ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar (7) [from Ḥumayd al-Aʿraj] from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm al-Taymī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muʿādh, from a Companion—and Allah knows best.
It is authentically established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (8), through Ibn Jurayj, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿĪsā ibn Ṭalḥah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, that while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the sermon on the Day of Sacrifice, a man stood up (9) and said, “I thought that such-and-such should come before such-and-such.” Then another stood and said, “I thought that such-and-such should precede such-and-such.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Do it, and there is no sin.” They (10) likewise narrated it from Mālik—Muslim and Yūnus adding their chains—from al-Zuhrī with several other wordings whose full treatment belongs in the Book of Legal Rulings; Allah’s help is sought. In another wording of the two Ṣaḥīḥs it states:
“On that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was not asked about anything done earlier or later (11)(12) except that he said, ‘Do it, and there is no sin.’”
