your Lord.’
I then asked, “Abū Umāmah, how old were you that day?” He replied, “That day I was thirty years old, elbowing the camel and easing it forward a step at a time for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
Aḥmad (1) also transmitted this report from Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ; and al-Tirmidhī (2) recorded it from Mūsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Kūfī, from Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb, judging it to be sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ).
Imām Aḥmad (3) said: “Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us; Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh (4) narrated to us; Shuraḥbīl ibn Muslim al-Khawlānī narrated to us: I heard Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī say:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaim in his sermon during the Farewell Pilgrimage: “Allah has allotted every rightful claimant his due; therefore no bequest is permitted for an heir. The child belongs to the marriage-bed, while for the adulterer there is only the stone, and their reckoning is with Allah. Whoever attributes himself to other than his own father, or affiliates himself to patrons not his own, upon him is the perpetual curse of Allah until the Day of Resurrection. A woman must not spend from her household except with her husband’s permission.”
It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, not even food?” He answered, “That is the best of our wealth.”
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: “A borrowed article must be returned, a grant must be repaid, a debt must be settled, and the guarantor is liable.” ’ ”
The four compilers of the Sunan (7) likewise recorded this ḥadīth through Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, and al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan.
Abū Dāwūd (8), under the heading “When is the sermon delivered on the Day of Sacrifice?” said: “ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Dimashqī narrated to us; Marwān narrated to us; Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir al-Muzanī related to me, saying that Rāfiʿ ibn ʿAmr al-Muzanī said:
‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people at Minā when the forenoon had advanced, mounted upon a gray mule, while ʿAlī interpreted for him and the people were either standing or sitting.’ ” Al-Nasāʾī (9) transmitted the same through Duḥaym, from Marwān al-Fazārī.
Imām Aḥmad (10) said: “Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir al-Muzanī narrated to us, from his father, who said:
‘I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ deliver the sermon to the people at Minā while riding a mule and wearing a red mantle. A man from among the veterans of Badr stood in front of him, conveying his words to the audience. I drew near and placed my hand between his foot and the stirrup, marveling at the softness of the mantle.’ ”
Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; a shaykh from Banū Fazārah narrated to us; from Hilāl ibn ʿĀmir al-Muzanī, from his father, who said: “I saw…”
