Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Aḥmad al-Harawī al-Anṣārī related to us; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbdān, the ḥāfiẓ of Ahwāz, related to us; Sahl ibn Mūsā in Shīrāz related to us; Mūsā ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿĀṣim related to us; Abū al-ʿAwwām related to us; Muḥammad ibn Juḥādah related to us, from Ziyād ibn ʿIlāqah, from Usāmah ibn Sharīk.

He said: “I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage while he was delivering a sermon and saying: ‘Your mother, then your father, then your sister, then your brother—then those who are nearest to you, those who are nearest to you.’

“Then some people came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Banū Yarbūʿ have killed us!’ He replied, ‘No soul bears the burden of another.’

“A man who had forgotten to stone the jamarāt asked him, and he said, ‘Go and cast the pebbles; there is no blame.’

“Another came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I forgot to perform ṭawāf.’ He said, ‘Perform your ṭawāf; there is no blame.’

“Another arrived who had shaved before offering his sacrifice and he was told, ‘Offer your sacrifice; there is no blame.’ On that day they asked him about nothing except that he said, ‘No blame, no blame.’

“He then said, ‘Allah has removed hardship, except from a man who infringes upon the honor of a Muslim—such a one is burdened and ruined.’

“And he said, ‘Allah has not sent down any disease without sending down its cure, except old age.’

Imām Aḥmad and the compilers of the Sunan have transmitted part of this wording through this chain, and al-Tirmidhī graded it sound and authentic.

Imām Aḥmad said: Ḥajjāj related to us; Shuʿbah related to me, from ʿAlī ibn Mudrik. I heard Abū Zurʿah narrate from Jarīr—his grandfather—from the Prophet ﷺ, who said during the Farewell Pilgrimage: ‘O Jarīr, have the people keep silent and listen.’ He then said in his sermon: ‘Do not revert after me to disbelief, striking one another’s necks.’ Aḥmad also recorded it from Ghundar and from Ibn Mahdī, both of them from Shuʿbah with this same chain, and both al-Bukhārī and Muslim included it in their Ṣaḥīḥs through Shuʿbah.

Aḥmad further said: Ibn Numayr related to us; Ismāʿīl related to us, from Qays, who said: ‘It reached us that Jarīr said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Have the people keep silent and listen.” He then added, “After what I see today, I must not find you returning as unbelievers, one of you striking the neck of another.”’
