They replied, “This very day.”
He then asked, “Which month enjoys the greatest sanctity?”
They said, “This month of ours.”
He asked, “Which land is the most sacred?”
They answered, “This land of ours.”
He said, “Indeed, your blood and your wealth are inviolable among you, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours. Have I conveyed the message?”
They replied, “Yes.”
He said, “O Allah, bear witness.”
Ahmad alone transmits this version through this chain, and it meets the criteria of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah also narrated it from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash with the same chain (1). The report of Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir concerning the Prophet’s ﷺ sermon on the Day of ʿArafah has already been cited. Allah knows best.
Imām Ahmad (2) said: ʿAlī ibn Baḥr narrated to us; ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus narrated to us; from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage …”—and he related its purport. Ibn Mājah (3) also recorded it through Hishām ibn ʿAmmār, from ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus with this chain, and its isnād satisfies the conditions of the two Ṣaḥīḥs. Allah knows best.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār (4) said: Abū Hishām narrated to us; Ḥafṣ narrated to us; from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon and said:
“Which day is this?”
They replied, “A sacred day.”
He said, “Then your blood and your property are indeed inviolable, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this city of yours.”
Al-Bazzār added: It was also narrated by Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd. Abū Hishām combined the two of them for us, reporting from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah and Abū Saʿīd.
I say: Aḥmad has already narrated it from Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Ṭanafīsī, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh, so it appears that Abū Ṣāliḥ heard it from all three of them. Allah knows best.
Hilāl ibn Yasāf reported from Salamah ibn Qays al-Ashjaʿī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, declared:
“Verily, there are only four (major prohibitions): do not associate anything with Allah, do not kill the soul that Allah has forbidden except in justice, do not commit adultery, and do not steal.”
He added, “There is nothing I guard more jealously than these words since I heard them from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
This was narrated by Imām Aḥmad (6) and al-Nasāʾī (7) from Manṣūr, from Hilāl ibn Yasāf; it was likewise transmitted by Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah and al-Thawrī from Manṣūr.
Ibn Ḥazm said in “Ḥijjat al-Wadāʿ” (8): “Aḥmad ibn ʿUmar ibn Anas al-ʿUdhri related to us; Abū Dharr ʿAbd …” (9)
