Al-Bukhārī relates—
(1) Hishām ibn al-Ghazz said: Nāfiʿ informed me from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ, during the pilgrimage in which he performed Ḥajj, halted on the Day of Sacrifice between the stone pillars. He proclaimed, “This is the Day of the Greater Pilgrimage.” The Prophet ﷺ then went on repeating, “O Allah, bear witness,” and he bade the people farewell; hence they called it the Farewell Pilgrimage. Abū Dāwūd (2) transmits this ḥadīth with an unbroken chain through Muʾammal ibn al-Faḍl from al-Walīd ibn Muslim, and Ibn Mājah (3) records it through Hishām ibn ʿAmmār from Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid—both of them tracing it back to Hishām ibn al-Ghazz ibn Rabīʿah al-Jurashī Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Dimashqī.
The Prophet’s ﷺ standing to deliver this sermon at the jamarāt could have taken place after he cast the stones on the Day of Sacrifice and before performing his circumambulation, or it may have occurred after the tawāf, when he returned to Minā and passed by the jamarāt once more.
The first possibility is reinforced by a narration reported by al-Nasā’ī (5): ʿAmr ibn Hishām al-Ḥarrānī told us, Muḥammad ibn Salamah related to us, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, from Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah, from Yaḥyā ibn Ḥuṣn al-Aḥmasī, from his grandmother Umm Ḥuṣayn, who said:
“I performed ḥajj in the year of the Prophet’s pilgrimage ﷺ. I saw Bilāl leading the she-camel by its halter, and Usāmah ibn Zayd shading him with a cloth from the heat while he was in iḥrām, until he stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah. He then addressed the people, praised Allah, extolled Him, and spoke at length.”
Muslim (7) transmits the same account through Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah, from Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḥuṣayn, from his grandmother Umm al-Ḥuṣayn, who said:
“I performed the Farewell Pilgrimage with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I saw Usāmah and Bilāl—one holding the rein of the Messenger of Allah’s she-camel ﷺ, the other shading him with a cloth from the heat—until he stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah. The Messenger of Allah then delivered a lengthy address. I heard him say, ‘If a mutilated slave—she thought she added: a black slave—is placed in authority over you and he leads you according to the Book of Allah, then listen to him and obey.’”
Imām Aḥmad (9) said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; al-Aʿmash narrated to us; from Abū Ṣāliḥ—namely, Dhakwān al-Sammān—from Jābir, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and asked, ‘Which day is the most sacred?’ They replied, ‘Our day …’
