the necks of one another.’
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded this report through al-Fallas from Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, and he graded it “sound and good (ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ).”
Al-Bukhārī likewise relates: ‘ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad told us; Abū ʿĀmir told us; Qurrāh told us, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah narrated to me—and a man whom I regard more highly than ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, namely Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān—both from Abū Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“The Prophet ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and said:
‘Do you know what day this is?’
We replied, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He remained silent until we thought he would give it another name, and then he asked, ‘Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?’
We said, ‘Indeed, it is.’
He then asked, ‘Which month is this?’
We answered, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ Again he was silent until we feared he would call it by another name, and then he said, ‘Is it not Dhū al-Ḥijjah?’
We replied, ‘Indeed, it is.’
He asked, ‘And what land is this?’
We said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He remained silent until we thought he would name it otherwise, and then declared, ‘Is it not the Sacred Precinct?’
We answered, ‘Indeed, it is.’
He then proclaimed, ‘Your blood and your property are inviolable among you, just as the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours, until the day you meet your Lord. Have I conveyed the message?’
They replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘O Allah, bear witness. Let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent, for it may be that the one to whom it is conveyed will grasp it more fully than the one who heard it directly. So do not turn back after me as unbelievers, striking the necks of one another.’ ”
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both transmit this ḥadīth through several chains from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn. Muslim also relates it through ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn, from Ibn Sīrīn, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Bakrah, from his father, with the same wording, and he adds at the end: “Then he turned to two speckled rams and slaughtered them, and to a small ewe from the flock, which he divided among us.”
Imām Aḥmad reports: Ismāʿīl related to us—Ayyūb informed us—on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn, from Abū Bakrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ delivered a sermon during his Farewell Pilgrimage in which he said, “Verily, time has completed its cycle, returning to the state it was in on the day Allah created the heavens….”
