with the exception of women—until you have circumambulated the House. Should evening come upon you before you perform that circumambulation, you revert to the state of iḥrām exactly as you were the first time, and remain so until you go round the House.
Abū Dāwūd also transmitted this report through Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, both of whom relate it from Ibn Abī ʿAdī, from Ibn Isḥāq, and he cited it in full.
Al-Bayhaqī produced it as well, by way of al-Ḥākim, from Abū Bakr ibn Isḥāq, from Abū al-Muthannā al-ʿAnbarī, from Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn, adding at the end:
Abū ʿUbaydah said, “Umm Qays bint Miḥṣan narrated to me:
‘ʿUkkāshah ibn Miḥṣan left my house with a group of men from Banū Asad on the afternoon of the Day of Sacrifice, all of them wearing sewn shirts. They returned to us later that same day carrying their shirts over their arms. I asked them what had happened, and they related to me the very ruling that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had given to Wahb ibn Zamʿah and his companion.’”
This ḥadīth is exceedingly unusual; I do not know of any scholar who has acted upon it.
The Prophet’s ﷺ Proceeding to the Ancient House
Jābir said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then mounted and proceeded to the House. He prayed the ẓuhr prayer in Mecca, came to the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib who were drawing water at Zamzam, and said, ‘Draw water, O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. Were it not that the people would overwhelm you concerning your watering service, I would draw along with you.’ They handed him a bucket and he drank from it.” Muslim narrates this.
This wording indicates that he ﷺ rode to Mecca before the sun reached its zenith, circumambulated the House, and, when he had finished, performed the noon prayer there.
Muslim also reports—through Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeded on the Day of Sacrifice and then returned and led the ẓuhr prayer in Minā. This contradicts Jābir’s narration, though both are found in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim. If one seeks to reconcile them, it may be said that he ﷺ prayed ẓuhr in Mecca, then returned to Minā, found the people waiting for him, and led them in prayer there—and Allah knows best.
His ﷺ return to Minā at the time of ẓuhr is entirely plausible, for it was summertime and the day was long. Although many actions had already been accomplished by him ﷺ earlier that morning—he had set out from Muzdalifah after dawn had become bright, but before sunrise; then he reached Minā, began by stoning Jamrat al-ʿAqabah with seven pebbles; thereafter he came and with his own hand slaughtered three sacrificial animals
