ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim related—through his father—from ʿĀʾishah, who said: “I used to perfume the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before he entered the state of iḥrām and again when he emerged from it, on the Day of Sacrifice, before he circumambulated the House, with a fragrance that contained musk.”
Al-Nasāʾī (1) transmits—through the chain of Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that she said: “I perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for his iḥrām when he assumed it, and for his release after he had stoned Jamrat al-ʿAqabah, before he circumambulated the House.”
Al-Shāfiʿī said: “Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah informed us, from ʿAmr b. Dīnār, from Sālim, who reported that ʿĀʾishah declared, ‘I myself perfumed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for both his release and his iḥrām.’” ʿAbd al-Razzāq likewise records this report through Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from Sālim, from ʿĀʾishah—and mentioned it in full.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (2) Ibn Jurayj narrates: ʿUmar b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUrwah told me that he heard ʿUrwah and al-Qāsim reporting from ʿĀʾishah that she said: “With my own two hands I applied a powdered perfume to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during the Farewell Pilgrimage, both for his assuming iḥrām and for his release from it.” Muslim (3) likewise records this through the isnād of al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān, from Abū’l-Rijāl, from his mother ʿAmrah, from ʿĀʾishah.
Sufyān al-Thawrī (4) reports—from Salamah b. Kuhayl, from al-Ḥasan al-ʿUranī (5), from Ibn ʿAbbās—that he said: “When you have cast the pebbles at the Jamrah you become lawful with respect to everything that had been forbidden to you—except women—until you perform ṭawāf of the House.” A man then asked, “And what about perfume, O Abū’l-ʿAbbās?” He replied, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smearing his head with musk. Tell me—does that count as perfume or not?”
Muḥammad b. Isḥāq (6) said: “Abū ʿUbaydah narrated to me from ʿAbd Allāh b. Zamʿah, from his father—and from his mother, Zaynab daughter of Umm Salamah—from Umm Salamah, who said:
‘The night on which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would come to me happened to fall on the Night of Sacrifice. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was with me when Wahb b. Zamʿah and a man from the family of Abū Umayyah entered, both wearing sewn shirts. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked them, “Have you performed the ifāḍah?”
They replied, “No.”
He said, “Then remove your shirts.” (7) So they removed them. Wahb asked, “Why, O Messenger of Allah?”
He answered, “This is a day on which a concession has been granted to you: once you have stoned the Jamrah and slaughtered your sacrifice—if you have one—you become lawful with respect to everything from which you had been forbidden…’”
