Imām Aḥmad (1) also said: “Yahyā ibn Ādam narrated to us; Zuhayr narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘During the Hajj the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sacrificed one hundred camels. He slaughtered sixty of them with his own blessed hand and ordered the remainder to be slaughtered. From each camel he took a piece of meat, the pieces were gathered in a pot, and he ate from them and drank their broth.
On the day of al-Hudaybiyyah he slaughtered seventy animals—among them the camel of Abū Jahl. When that camel was turned away from the House, it cried out like a she-camel yearning for its young.’”
Ibn Mājah (2) transmits part of this report, through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad, from Wakīʿ, from Sufyān al-Thawrī, from Ibn Abī Laylā.
Imām Aḥmad (3) further said: “Yaʿqūb narrated to us; my father narrated to us; from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who related: A man told me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid ibn Jabr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘At the Farewell Pilgrimage the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dedicated one hundred sacrificial camels. He slaughtered thirty of them with his own hand, then instructed ʿAlī to slaughter the remainder. He said:
‘Distribute (4) their meat, skins, and saddle-cloths among the people; do not give the butcher any share of them. Take from each camel a piece (5) of meat for us, place all the pieces in a single pot so that we may eat of the meat and drink of the broth.’ So he did.
It is authentically recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs (6), in the narration of Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from ʿAlī, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered me (7) to supervise his sacrificial camels, to give their meat, skins, and saddle-cloths in charity, and not to give the butcher anything from them, saying, “We shall pay him from our own resources.”’
Abū Dāwūd (8) said: “Muḥammad ibn Ḥātim narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from Ḥarmalah ibn ʿImrān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith al-Azdī, who said: I heard Ghurafah (9) ibn al-Ḥārith al-Kindī say:
‘I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the sacrificial camels were brought before him. He said, “Call (10) Abū al-Ḥasan for me,” and ʿAlī was summoned. He said to him, “Hold the spear by its lower end,” while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ held it by the upper end and pierced (11) the camels with it. When he had finished, he mounted his mule and seated ʿAlī behind him.’”
