Ibn Maʿīn declared this report fabricated, while Aḥmad, Abū Zurʿah, Abū Ḥātim, Ibn Ḥibbān, and others judged it weak—Allah knows best.
Kaʿb al-Aḥbār said, “No one in Paradise has a beard except Adam; his beard is black and reaches his navel. Nor is anyone there addressed by a kunya except Adam: in this world he is called Abū l-Bashar, while in Paradise he is Abū Muḥammad.”
Ibn ʿAdī transmitted—through the route of Shaykh … ibn Abī Khālid, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh—in marfūʿ form: “The people of Paradise will be summoned by their personal names, except for Adam, for he will be addressed by his kunya: Abū Muḥammad.” Ibn ʿAdī also narrated it from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, yet the report is weak from every perspective—Allah knows best.
Related to this is the ḥadith of the Night Journey found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Adam in the lowest heaven, Adam said, “Welcome, righteous son!” The Prophet noticed figures to Adam’s right and figures to his left; whenever Adam looked to his right he smiled, and whenever he looked to his left he wept. The Prophet asked, “O Gabriel, what is this?” He replied, “This is Adam and these are the souls of his descendants: when he looks toward those on the right—the people of Paradise—he smiles, and when he looks toward those on the left—the people of the Fire—he weeps.” Such is the sense of the narration.
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: Muḥammad ibn al-Mathnā related to us, Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, Hishām ibn Ḥassān informed us, from al-Ḥasan, who said, “Adam’s intellect equaled the collective intellect of all his children.”
Some scholars commented on the Prophet’s ﷺ words, “I passed by Joseph, and he had been granted half of all beauty,” explaining that Joseph possessed half the beauty of Adam — upon him be peace. This is fitting, for Allah fashioned Adam with His noble Hand and breathed into him of His spirit; thus He created him in the most perfect form.
We have also transmitted—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr and likewise from Ibn ʿUmar, both as mawqūf and marfūʿ—the report: “When Allah created Paradise, the angels said, ‘Our Lord, grant it to us, for You have created the world for the children of Adam to eat and drink in.’ Allah replied, ‘By My might and majesty, I shall never make the righteous offspring of him whom I fashioned with My own hands equal to those to whom I merely said, “Be!” and they were.’”
Moreover, the ḥadith recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and elsewhere states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed, Allah created Adam…”
